Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) urged on Sept. 22 for the repeal of the years-long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-national-emergency-declaration\">national emergency declaration<\/a> following President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-joe-biden\">Joe Biden<\/a>\u2019s recent remarks that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-covid-19\">COVID-19<\/a> pandemic \u201cis over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Republican lawmaker of Kansas introduced on Thursday a privileged resolution that calls for a vote to end the undergoing emergency declaration over the global pandemic, which has been in place since being firstly announced by then-President Donald Trump in March 2020.<\/p>\n<p>GOP lawmakers in the House previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us-senate-passes-bill-to-end-covid-19-national-emergency_4315157.html\">attempted in March<\/a>\u00a0to end the state of emergency yet failed to scrap the declaration.<\/p>\n<p>The latest move came after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/biden-says-covid-19-pandemic-is-over_4739618.html\">Biden made the comments<\/a> during CBS\u2019s \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview that aired Sunday night. \u201cWe still have a problem with COVID. We\u2019re still doing a lot of work on it. But the pandemic is over,\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince President Biden used his appearance on 60 Minutes to declare COVID is over, he must immediately terminate the COVID-19 national emergency declaration and wind down other emergency authorities that his Administration continues to force us to live under,\u201d Marshall said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/wsj-sen-marshall-to-force-vote-on-ending-covid-19-emergency-declaration\/\">Sept. 22 statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American people are fatigued and yearning to operate outside of the confines of supersized government. They long for their God-given freedoms, and for leaders to take their side,\u201d said Marshall. \u201cIt\u2019s high time for Joe Biden and his Administration to stop using COVID to implement their partisan political agenda and focus on the surge in crime and the fentanyl epidemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ongoing use of the emergency declaration has allowed the administration to leverage Congress into steer additional funds to address the pandemic, provides a legal basis for suspending payment interest and deadlines for student loans, and shut down ports of entry.<\/p>\n<h2>Hot Water<\/h2>\n<p>Biden\u2019s off-the-cuff comment has surprised his health officials and other Democrat colleagues, with White House chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/after-biden-declares-covid-19-pandemic-is-over-fauci-reveals-what-he-really-meant_4742289.html\">attempting to reshape<\/a> the president\u2019s narrative, warning that \u201cpeople should not be cavalier that we\u2019re out of the woods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/omb\/briefing-room\/2022\/09\/02\/meeting-critical-needs-for-the-american-people-in-the-new-fiscal-year\/\">asked<\/a> Congress for more than $22 billion in additional COVID-19 funding to support research on vaccines, testing, preparations, and treatment.\u00a0Republicans argued that the additional relief funding isn\u2019t necessary given Biden\u2019s comment. Previously, GOP lawmakers signaled they aren\u2019t willing to back the White House\u2019s latest request.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/biden-admin-to-cancel-10000-of-student-loan-debt-for-millions-despite-inflation-concerns_4685966.html\">announced<\/a> in August he would wipe out the federal student loan balances of millions of people with up to $20,000 in debt per recipient, using authority\u00a0under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/olc\/file\/1528451\/download\">2003 HEROES Act<\/a> that allows the government to waive or modify student loans during national emergencies such as a war.<\/p>\n<p>The executive action means that one-time forgiveness of $10,000 per borrower will cost about $300 billion for taxpayers, or $330 billion if the program continues over the next decade, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/budgetmodel.wharton.upenn.edu\/issues\/2022\/8\/23\/forgiving-student-loans\">a budget estimate<\/a> from economists at Penn Wharton.
