As other countries impose energy consumption restrictions upon their citizens while continuing to prioritize <a href=\"http:\/\/dailywire.com\/topic\/climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">green energy<\/a> commitments, British Prime Minister <a href=\"http:\/\/dailywire.com\/topic\/liz-truss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liz Truss<\/a> has pushed for higher fossil fuel production and set the goal of becoming a net exporter of energy by 2040.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are cutting off the toxic power and pipelines from authoritarian regimes and strengthening our energy resilience,\u201d Truss said Wednesday during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/prime-minister-liz-trusss-speech-to-the-un-general-assembly-21-september-2022\">speech<\/a> to the United Nations General Assembly. \u201cWe will ensure we cannot be coerced or harmed by the reckless actions of rogue actors abroad. We will transition to a future based on renewable and nuclear energy while ensuring that the gas used during that transition is from reliable sources including our own North Sea production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The British government subsequently announced a new round of oil and gas leases for the North Sea and lifted its moratorium on shale gas production \u2014 including the practice of fracking, by which pressurized liquid is injected into underground rocks to force open fissures and extract fuels. The prohibition was initially established in 2019 amid concerns over earthquakes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn light of Putin\u2019s illegal invasion of Ukraine and weaponisation of energy, strengthening our energy security is an absolute priority, and \u2014 as the Prime Minister said \u2014 we are going to ensure the UK is a net energy exporter by 2040,\u201d British Energy Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg remarked in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-government-takes-next-steps-to-boost-domestic-energy-production\">statement<\/a>. \u201cTo get there we will need to explore all avenues available to us through solar, wind, oil and gas production \u2014 so it\u2019s right that we\u2019ve lifted the pause to realise any potential sources of domestic gas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After succeeding fellow Conservative Party member Boris Johnson two weeks ago, Truss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/british-prime-minister-liz-truss-unveils-package-to-cut-soaring-fuel-prices-offers-reforms-so-we-are-never-in-this-position-again\">proposed legislation<\/a> that would limit the annual cost of power for a typical household to \u00a32,500, or roughly $2,820, for the next two years. This plan would cost a total of \u00a3150 billion, or $169 billion. The nation\u2019s government has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/getting-the-energy-bills-support-scheme-discount\">greenlit<\/a> the Energy Bills Support Scheme, which is slated to remove \u00a3400 from residents\u2019 power bills each month over the upcoming winter.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers in the European Union, of which the United Kingdom is no longer a part, likewise grapple with energy prices that have increased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/european-climate-bureaucrats-are-dooming-the-continent-to-a-very-dark-winter\">as much as twentyfold<\/a> in some member states. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/european-union-social-market-economy-might-redistribute-fossil-fuel-profits\">called<\/a> for redistributing profits from fossil fuel companies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our social market economy, profits are good. But in these times it is wrong to receive extraordinary record profits benefitting from war and on the back of consumers,\u201d she said in her most recent state of the union address.<\/p>\n<p>Several large European manufacturers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/european-companies-pause-production-as-energy-prices-soar\">shuttering their factories<\/a> as energy prices climb. The producer price index for industrial goods in Germany, the continent\u2019s largest economy, has risen 45.8% year-over-year as of August 2022, according to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany.
