Liz Cheney and Rep. Zoe Lofgren, a Democrat from California who is under Cheney on the Jan. 6 Committee, reforms the 135-year-old law to narrow the grounds for objections to presidential electors and open the door to late-day voting.<\/p>\n<p>Cheney\u2019s \u201cPresidential Election Reform Act\u201d became the Democrats\u2019 answer to their failed effort to override state election laws in H.R. 1, which Senate Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/06\/22\/senate-to-vote-on-s1-for-the-people-act-bill.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blocked<\/a> last summer. The legislation carries some of the same provisions of the doomed election bill at the top of Democrats\u2019 congressional agenda. Just nine Republicans supported the bill, all but one of whom supported President Donald Trump\u2019s second impeachment and are either retiring or have lost their primaries.<\/p>\n<p>New York Republican Rep. Claudia Tenney, who co-chairs the Election Integrity Caucus, condemned the bill as \u201cthe latest attempt from House Democrats to stack the democratic process in their favor\u201d and complained that the proposal did not go through the proper legislative process. The text was only released days before the Wednesday vote and received no bipartisan hearing or markup in committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is nothing more than a partisan messaging bill intended to score cheap political points weeks before an election,\u201d Tenney said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/tenney.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/congresswoman-tenneys-statement-presidential-election-reform-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a> outlining the legislation\u2019s flaws. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bill broadly defines a \u2018catastrophic event,\u2019 which could be used to extend balloting for up to five days after the polls close in a presidential election,\u201d Tenney said. \u201cIt also tramples on the core principle of state sovereignty and directly contradicts the United States Constitution. The legislation also creates broad private rights of action in a backdoor to empower Democrat election lawyers and partisan operatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The congresswoman from central New York called on her colleagues to outlaw the private takeover of elections through \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/zuckerbucks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zuckerbucks<\/a>\u201d and boost security at the ballot box. <\/p>\n<p>Illinois Republican Rep. Rodney Davis similarly condemned the bill\u2019s expedited passage through the lower chamber on the House floor and highlighted the hypocrisy over electoral objections. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats have objected to every single Republican presidential win in the 21st century,\u201d Davis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zxpgXAW5_JE&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/fact-check-did-democrats-object-more-states-2016-republicans-2020-1561407\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">objected<\/a> to more states certifying President Donald Trump\u2019s win than Republicans did four years later for Joe Biden. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe what the House Democrats and the Jan. 6 Committee are doing is irresponsible and wrong,\u201d Davis said. \u201cThey have allowed their dislike for one man, President Trump, to cloud their judgment and guide their actions \u2014 no matter the consequences to this institution or the Constitution that they claim to want to uphold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/09\/21\/house-passes-jan-6-panel-bill-to-reform-electoral-count-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According <\/a>to Axios, similar legislation in the upper chamber has already drawn support from the 10 Republicans needed in the split Senate to circumvent a filibuster. <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist.
