The decision comes as a rebuff of Beasley, who the association endorsed for statewide judicial runs in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sspba.org\/gen\/articles\/NCPBA_Invited_to_Investiture_of_Cheri_Beasley_as_Associate_Justice_of_the_North_Carolina_Supreme_Court_320.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2008<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sspba.org\/gen\/articles\/2014_NCPBA_Endorsed_Candidates_495.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sspba.org\/gen\/articles\/2020_NCPBA_Endorsed_Candidates_839.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a>. When it comes to the Democrat&#8217;s Senate bid, however, association president David Rose took issue with Beasley&#8217;s decision to associate with &#8220;defund the police activists&#8221;\u2014last year, Beasley authorized a <a href=\"https:\/\/nsjonline.com\/article\/2021\/07\/cheri-beasley-teams-with-controversial-missouri-rep-to-fundraise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joint fundraising committee<\/a> with Missouri Democratic congresswoman Cori Bush, a self-described democratic socialist who says &#8220;defunding the police has to happen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With violent crime on the rise in North Carolina, more than ever before, we need a senator who has our backs and not someone who is supported by Defund the Police activists,&#8221; Rose said in a Wednesday statement. &#8220;We endorse Ted Budd for U.S. Senate because he&#8217;s the best choice for NC.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Beasley, whose campaign did not return a request for comment, has faced criticism on her public safety record as a judge. As a state Supreme Court justice, for example, the Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/as-judge-cheri-beasley-wanted-lighter-sentence-for-career-criminal-who-possessed-weapon-of-mass-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voted to vacate<\/a> a career criminal&#8217;s habitual felon status after the man was caught with a &#8220;weapon of mass death,&#8221; a decision that would have given the felon a lighter sentence. Beasley has worked to sidestep that criticism by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/raleigh\/2022\/08\/31\/cheri-beasley-fund-police-nc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pledging<\/a> to fund police and work with Republicans on crime, a pledge the North Carolina Police Benevolent Association does not appear to have bought.<\/p>\n<p>Budd is also backed by the National Border Patrol Council and the North Carolina Troopers Association, which also <a href=\"https:\/\/tedbudd.com\/ted-budd-endorsed-by-north-carolina-troopers-association\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">endorsed Beasley<\/a> in the past.
