Gretchen Whitmer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s action clarifies that Michigan pharmacists with delegated authority can prescribe self-administered hormonal birth control \u2014 oral contraceptives, the patch, and the ring \u2014 expanding access to birth control for women across Michigan and ensuring that they can plan their own future on their own terms,\u201d Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in a statement to <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/health\/2022\/09\/19\/birth-control-pills-patch-michigan-pharmacy\/69503774007\/\">Detroit Free Press<\/a>.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>This may not be going far enough for Whitmer, who has been calling for birth control to be made available over the counter without a prescription for some time. In July, she sent a letter to President Joe Biden requesting his aid in making that happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all need to get creative and use every tool in our toolbox to protect reproductive freedom in Michigan and across the United States,\u201d said Gov. Whitmer in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/whitmer\/news\/press-releases\/2022\/07\/11\/whitmer-calls-on-president-biden-to-make-birth-control-available-over-the-counter\">press release<\/a>. \u201cToday, I sent a letter to President Biden urging federal action to make birth control available over the counter, without a prescription. Getting this done would knock down the most costly, time-consuming barrier to obtaining birth control. In the wake of the overturn of <a href=\"http:\/\/\u200b\u200bhttps:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/watch-mazie-hirono-calls-for-violence-against-pro-life-americans\">Roe v Wade<\/a>, we must pull out all the stops to make it easier and more affordable for everyone to secure contraception and take bold steps to protect women by ensuring that health\u2014not politics\u2014guides medical decisions. Let\u2019s work together so women have control over their own bodies.\u201d<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>With this change, Michigan joins 20 other U.S. states and the District of Columbia with allowances for pharmacists to prescribe contraception, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/naspa.us\/resource\/contraceptives\/#:~:text=Currently%2C%20there%20are%2021%20U.S.,Mexico%2C%20North%20Carolina%2C%20Oregon%2C\">National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Michigan pharmacists will be allowed to opt into the program if they choose, and those who do not wish to provide hormonal birth control prescriptions will not be forced to.<\/p>\n<p>Whether abortion will remain legal in the state so far remains uncertain, with <a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/breaking-kansas-voters-choose-to-keep-abortion-legal\">voters<\/a> getting the chance to weigh in on the upcoming November 8 election.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>A proposal to amend the state constitution in regards to abortion rights will appear on the ballot as <a href=\"https:\/\/oceana.mi.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/RFA-Ballot-Language-AS-APPROVED-State-Prop-22-3-002.pdf\u00a0\">Proposal 22-3<\/a>.
