While there are medical and religious exemptions to the shot, they are rarely given out, triggering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/coast-guardsmen-denied-religious-exemptions-from-covid-19-vaccine-mandate-sue-biden-administration_4742462.html\">lawsuits<\/a> and even a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2022\/09\/19\/pentagon-likely-rushed-denials-of-covid-19-vaccine-religious-exemption-requests-watchdog-finds.html\">warning<\/a> from the DOD inspector general.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly, from the Department of Defense standpoint, we still have a requirement to vaccinate when it comes to COVID. And so we\u2019ll continue to implement our measures,\u201d Pentagon press secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder said during a news conference Tuesday, according to a transcript of his remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Echoing previous remarks from Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, the vaccine mandate, Ryder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Transcripts\/Transcript\/Article\/3164757\/pentagon-press-secretary-air-force-brig-gen-pat-ryder-holds-an-on-camera-press\/\">asserted<\/a>, is \u201cabout readiness\u201d and \u201cabout war-fighting readiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon spokesman was responding to a question about whether the DOD will change its vaccine requirement in light of Biden\u2019s interview over the past weekend in which the president declared the pandemic over.<\/p>\n<p>Other officials in the federal government, including Surgeon General Vivek Murthy and White House adviser Anthony Fauci, have attempted to recast Biden\u2019s comments to shape a narrative that COVID-19 isn\u2019t finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat [Biden] really meant is that the very severe stage of the pandemic of having \u2026 3,000 deaths a day\u2014that stage is no longer present,\u201d Fauci <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/playbook\">told<\/a> Politico on Tuesday before adding that \u201cpeople should not be cavalier that we\u2019re out of the woods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Concerns <\/p>\n<p>Republican lawmakers have warned that the COVID-19 vaccine may lead to the military losing thousands of troops who haven\u2019t complied with the mandate.
