More deportation flights were scheduled Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Immigration advocates track ICE flights and have noted that, as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JakobJohnston\/status\/1361343227475951624\">recently as February 15th<\/a>, immigrants seeking asylum in the United States have been returned to their home countries.<\/p>\n<p>Progressive activists, horrified by the continued deportations, are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2021\/02\/22\/opinion\/biden-administration-is-deporting-hundreds-haitians-country-mired-political-chaos\/\">also quick to absolve Biden of responsibility<\/a>, suggesting that the Trump administration\u2019s immigration policies were so draconian that they have their own momentum, and Biden is powerless to stop certain removals.<\/p>\n<p>But the Biden administration, while issuing the deportation halt, has left a number of Trump-era immigration hurdles in place, including a provision that allows ICE to \u201cexpel\u201d certain illegal immigrants seeking asylum rather than go through a formal deportation process, under the theory that unscreened individuals from other countries are a threat to public health because they could be carrying COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration has not lifted that hurdle, despite activist pleas.<\/p>\n<p>There is increasing speculation that, despite assurances to the contrary, Biden\u2019s reformed immigration policies are not going to differ markedly from Trump\u2019s. On Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bidens-first-detention-facility-for-immigrant-border-crossers-opens-critics-mock-change-in-coverage-now-that-a-democrat-is-in-office\">the Daily Wire reported that<\/a>, despite openly criticizing President Donald Trump for keeping \u201ckids in cages\u201d during an immigration crisis in 2018, the Biden administration opened an illegal immigrant detention facility, specifically designed to house children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe emergency facility \u2014 a vestige of the Trump administration that was open for only a month in summer 2019 \u2014 is being reactivated to hold up to 700 children ages 13 to 17,\u201d the Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/immigrant-children-camp-texas-biden\/2021\/02\/22\/05dfd58c-7533-11eb-8115-9ad5e9c02117_story.html\">said<\/a>. \u201cGovernment officials say the camp is needed because facilities for migrant children have had to cut capacity by nearly half because of the coronavirus pandemic.
