It was included in August\u2019s edition of the peer-reviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/adc.bmj.com\/content\/early\/2022\/08\/23\/archdischild-2022-324172.info\">journal<\/a> <span class=\"highwire-cite-metadata-journal highwire-cite-metadata\"><em>Archives of Disease in Childhood,\u00a0<\/em>which is a part of the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Though COVID-19 variants such as Omicron occurred outside of the timeframe of the study, researchers maintain it is \u201cunlikely that the effectiveness of the mask mandate measure will increase with a more transmissible variant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe analysed routinely collected health data to compare the incidence of SARS-CoV-2, secondary attack rates and the effective reproductive number among school children, comparing those without mandatory face covering masks (FCM)\u00a0and those with FCM\u00a0during the first term of the school year 2021\u20132022, to assess the effect of FCM mandates on SARS-CoV-2 transmission within schools,\u201d explains a summary of the work.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41937\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41937\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thenationalpulse.com\/?attachment_id=41937\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41937\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Study, pr\u00e9cis \u2013 click to embiggen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Researchers focused on comparing children in the last year of preschool (P5) and the first year of primary education, as the younger group had no face mask mandate, whereas the older group did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe aim of our study was not to measure the individual effectiveness of FCM, but to evaluate the effectiveness of mask mandates in the real-world context of schools,\u201d prefaced researchers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main findings of the study show no significant differences for children in the last grade of preschool (P5) and the first year of primary education in COVID-19 transmission indicators during the study period, despite their difference in FCM mandate and the strong age dependency of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in schools,\u201d explained researchers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe age trend observed for P5 and older children follows a different pattern when P3 and P4 are included in the analysis,\u201d the study continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith no mandatory use of FCM, the youngest children have significantly lower transmission indicators when compared with any other group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn conclusion, FCM mandates in schools showed no significant differences in terms of transmission.
