support from both major parties, believing increased government surveillance would help protect the country from another terrorist attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While civil libertarians of all stripes were in the minority in opposing the Patriot Act, the largest and most significant political faction that opposed it \u2013 by far \u2013 was progressives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Progressives\u2019 primary argument: The Patriot Act would empower the federal government to unfairly harass Muslims and minorities, but it would also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/other\/surveillance-under-usapatriot-act\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>target<\/span><\/a><span> U.S. citizens overall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Left further denounced it as unconstitutional. During the 2003 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/other\/surveillance-under-usapatriot-act\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>Iraq War protests<\/span><\/a><span>, one of the largest protests in history, opposition to the Patriot Act was a major part of that outcry. From ABC News on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/PollVault\/story?id=833703\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>extending<\/span><\/a><span> the Patriot Act in 2005: \u201cExtending the Patriot Act gets broad support from Republicans and a narrow majority of independents, but it\u2019s opposed by just over half of Democrats.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The loudest among those Democrats were undoubtedly progressives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/17392\/liberty-vs-security-public-mixed-patriot-act.aspx\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>From<\/span><\/a> <i><span>Gallup<\/span><\/i><span> in 2005: \u201cPartisanship is a major factor when it comes to public opinion about the Patriot Act. More than a third (37%) of Democrats think it goes too far in restricting civil liberties, as do 4 in 10 political independents (40%) \u2014 but only 12% of Republicans think the Patriot Act goes too far. During that time, the Department of Homeland Security and other government agencies <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/homeland-security-department-curtails-home-grown-terror-analysis\/2011\/06\/02\/AGQEaDLH_story.html\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>warned<\/span><\/a><span> about the dangers that homegrown \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/blog\/were-all-terrorists-now\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>terrorists<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d supposedly posed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A 2011 <\/span><span>Pew Research Center<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/2011\/02\/15\/public-remains-divided-over-the-patriot-act\/\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>poll<\/span><\/a><span> showed that the number of Democrats who believed the Patriot Act was a \u201cnecessary tool\u201d had gone up by 10%, from only 25% in 2006 to 35% five years later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Today, Democrats are evenly split with half supporting the Patriot Act and half opposing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A Tufts University <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tufts-pol.medium.com\/americans-do-not-want-a-new-patriot-act-but-opinions-differ-by-party-bf481ea2f1f7\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>poll<\/span><\/a><span> published in March 2021<\/span>\u2014<span>three months after the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol<\/span>\u2014<span>revealed that \u201c44% of Democrats (24% somewhat and 20% strongly) support a new Patriot Act, while 44% of Democrats (22% somewhat and 22% strongly) oppose it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Conversely, \u201cIndependents and Republicans oppose a new Patriot Act, with 52% of Independents (18% somewhat and 34% strongly) and 68% of Republicans (22% somewhat and 46% strongly) not in favor of this idea.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The dynamics of the Patriot Act debate have almost completely reversed from where they stood a decade ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>From its inception, it was a majority of Republicans who trusted George W.
