What is cap? Where exactly are people living rent free?<\/p>\n<p>If you have kids, you probably want to understand the younger generation\u2019s media, or, if you\u2019re like me, you\u2019re just a few years shy of fitting in with \u2013 and understanding \u2013 Generation Z and their way of speaking. So, to save you some time on Instagram (and from China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/leaked-internal-audio-from-tiktok-shows-u-s-user-data-accessed-from-china-despite-denials-report\">stealing<\/a> your data on TikTok), here\u2019s a rundown of some of Gen Z\u2019s most popular slang.<\/p>\n<p>Drip<\/p>\n<p>Appearing in songs by Beyonce, Cardi B, and Lizzo, the word \u201cdrip\u201d means you\u2019ve got style. \u201cI be dripping so much sauce \/ Gotta been looking like rag\u00f9,\u201d Lizzo sings in \u201cJuice.\u201d In \u201cDrip,\u201d Cardi B sings, \u201cCame through drippin\u2019 (drip drip) \/ Diamonds on my wrist, they drippin\u2019 (ice).\u201d (Ice referring here to the diamonds.) The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/e\/slang\/drip\/#:~:text=The%20hip%2Dhop%20blog%20HipHopDX,as%20slang%20for%20%E2%80%9Ccool.%E2%80%9D\">origins<\/a> of this specific meaning for \u201cdrip\u201d are contested, but if anyone ever compliments you on your drip, you can thank them.<\/p>\n<p>Fire<\/p>\n<p>As in \u201cThat song is fire!\u201d (often accompanied by the fire emoji), fire means something is cool. (Ironic, I know.) You might have heard the similar term \u201clit,\u201d though <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hootsuite\/status\/1175398067924869120\">according<\/a> to some social media gurus, lit is \u201cno longer considered cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hits different<\/p>\n<p>A pumpkin spice latte at the start of an autumn Target run just hits different. According to one <a href=\"https:\/\/slang.net\/meaning\/hits_different\">site<\/a>, a moment that \u201caffects you in a meaningful way\u201d is one that \u201chits different.\u201d Whatever the experience may be, it\u2019s one that, under different circumstances, just wouldn\u2019t be the same. For example, \u201cListening to music just hits different now that I understand all the slang.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Living rent-free [in someone\u2019s head]\n<p>This phrase is appropriate in a case of unrequited hatred; someone can\u2019t stand you, but you couldn\u2019t care less what they think. For example, \u201cRon DeSantis lives rent-free in Whoopi Goldberg\u2019s head.\u201d As Demi Lovato <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vImvzQCb0o8\">sings<\/a>, \u201cHaters that live on the internet \/ Live in my head, should be paying rent.\u201d The phrase apparently <a href=\"https:\/\/melmagazine.com\/en-us\/story\/living-in-your-head-rent-free#:~:text=The%20original%20quote%2C%20%E2%80%9CHanging%20onto,her%20pen%20name%20Ann%20Landers.\">came from<\/a> an \u201cAsk Ann\u201d column in which the eponymous advice-giver wrote, \u201cHanging onto resentment is letting someone you despise live rent-free in your head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Main character<\/p>\n<p>Everybody wants to be the main character of their own story, right? This phrase is about \u201cromanticizing your life,\u201d per the TikTok <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bustle.com\/life\/what-does-main-character-energy-on-tiktok-mean\">trend<\/a> that helped popularize it. Something has \u201cmain character energy\u201d if it exudes confidence. As songwriter Qveen Herby sings in \u201cRabbit Hole,\u201d \u201cSeriously, like have you seen my silhouette? Sheesh \/ It\u2019s giving main character energy.\u201d (This lyric is a Gen Z triple whammy: In addition to \u201cmain character,\u201d we have \u201csheesh,\u201d which, rather than being an expression of exasperation, is usually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bustle.com\/life\/sheesh-meaning-tiktok-viral-gen-z\">positive<\/a>, and \u201cit\u2019s giving\u201d means \u201cto give off, as in vibes,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2022\/07\/origin-vibes-charisma-emotional-politics\/661469\/\">per<\/a> The Atlantic.)<\/p>\n<p>No cap<\/p>\n<p>If you hear someone say something unbelievable followed by \u201cno cap,\u201d you better believe it. Cap means to lie or exaggerate, so you can either say something like, \u201cI saw him, no cap,\u201d or, \u201cthat\u2019s cap.\u201d Rappers Young Thug &#038; Future popularized the term in 2017 with the release of \u201cNo Cap.\u201d Though, its meaning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/e\/slang\/no-cap\/\">appears<\/a> to date all the way back to the early 1900s. No cap!<\/p>\n<p>Spill the tea<\/p>\n<p>Often said as \u201cspill the tea, sis,\u201d this phrase means you\u2019re ready for some gossip. The phrase evidently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/words-at-play\/tea-slang-meaning-origin\">originated<\/a> from the 1994 book \u201cMidnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,\u201d in which a character uses \u201cmy T\u201d to refer to truth. Now, the truth is just juicy gossip.<\/p>\n<p>Stan<\/p>\n<p>If you \u201cstan\u201d something, you\u2019re a superfan, a buy-tickets-to-every-concert kind of fan. It can be a noun, as in \u201cI\u2019m such a Dave Chappelle stan,\u201d or a verb, as in \u201cI stan Dolly Parton.\u201d The word was actually added to Merriam-Webster\u2019s lexicon in 2019, though the dictionary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/stan\">refers<\/a> to it as \u201cslang, often disparaging,\u201d so use it with caution. The use of \u201cStan\u201d as more than a nickname for Stanley came from a 2000 Eminem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/eminem-stan-merriam-websters-dictionary-entry-826557\/\">song<\/a>, which finds the star rapping about an obsessive, overzealous fan.<\/p>\n[This is] sending me<\/p>\n<p>When you say something is \u201csending you,\u201d you mean it\u2019s provoking a strong, usually humorous, reaction. We don\u2019t know. Though it\u2019s presumably somewhere with funny memes. This is not to be confused with a \u201cfull send,\u201d however, which means going all-in on something \u2013 like spending your evening watching a compilation of Biden gaffes.<\/p>\n<p>So, there you go. Now a collection of Gen Z slang can live rent-free in your head.
