Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) took aim at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-california\">California<\/a>\u2019s plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-ban\">ban<\/a> gas-powered cars, telling reporters at a recent press conference in Florida that due to continued reliance on fossil fuels to generate electricity to charge electric vehicles (EVs), the scheme is self-defeating and silly.<\/p>\n<p>Rubio made the remarks during a press conference in West Palm Beach on Sept. 16, in which he said California lacks the ability to produce enough electricity with solar and wind to meet the state\u2019s plans to phase out sales of gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035 and replace them with electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they\u2019re going to go to all battery-powered cars, then I guess they\u2019re going to be charging their cars with coal and natural gas, because that\u2019s how you produce electricity because they don\u2019t like nuclear plants,\u201d Rubio said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I don\u2019t think you can generate enough power for a state like California based on solar and wind. So in the end, it\u2019s self-defeating,\u201d the Republican senator added.<\/p>\n<p>Rubio said he believes electric vehicle technology will continue to advance and the day will come when there\u2019ll be more of them on American roads. But market mechanisms\u2014not government dictates\u2014should be the driving force behind widespread EV adoption, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think you\u2019re going to get there through government mandates that force you to get to that point,\u201d Rubio said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the \u201chypocrisy\u201d and \u201csilliness\u201d of California\u2019s scheme to ban gas-powered cars is reflected in such situations as California\u2019s power grid operator telling EV drivers not to charge their vehicles at certain times because it puts too much pressure on the grid.<\/p>\n<p>When government tries to force the widespread adoption of EVs \u201cbefore the science gets there,\u201d it will only burden people with higher costs and will lead to \u201cridiculous outcomes\u201d like people going to states<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
