Meet George Mackay\u2019s Toby Nealy, soon to be pitted against an archly acted Hugh Bonneville.<\/p>\n<p>The film opens conventionally (though with an ingenious twist) and establishes Toby\u2019s goodness by showing that he and a partner Jay (Percelle Ascot) target the elite by breaking into their elegant flats.<\/p>\n<p>From there, they decorate their abodes with beautiful art that mars their superficial expressions of elitist aesthetics. They leave after spray painting, \u201cI Came By,\u201d prominently within their false sanctum sanctorum.<\/p>\n<p>The story is complicated by Jay learning his partner is pregnant, convincing him to quit Toby\u2019s long-running graffiti team.<\/p>\n<p>This setback doesn\u2019t stop Toby from attempting to break into what was to be the partners\u2019 next victim, Sir Hector Blake (Bonneville) \u2014 a man of privilege, intrigue and mysterious motivations.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Want a tight little thriller that will remind you of Ruth Rendell and Patricia Highsmith? It does the job.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Stephen King (@StephenKing) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StephenKing\/status\/1570220063596191745?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 15, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In less inventive hands, this might be the story of a burglar who \u201cpicked the wrong house.\u201d That\u2019s precisely what we get at first.<\/p>\n<p>The repeated trope of the \u201cvillain leaves his home while suspicious person watches him go and then breaks in to get information\u201d begins to wear thin. The film\u2019s second two-thirds fulfills and nullifies this early disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>What ensues is a shifting sense of whom the audience is to sympathize with and identify. This isn\u2019t to say we ever entertain empathy for the villain; the film is not interested in complicating the audience\u2019s moral lives.<\/p>\n<p>The film establishes Toby early on as that protagonist. But the presence of Sir Hector Blake and his success complicates a shift in our understanding of what we\u2019re watching.<\/p>\n<p>Here, then, is an echo of Sir Anthony Hopkin\u2019s original portrayal of Hannibal Lecter, one so masterful it bent the arc of audience sympathies by the end.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t to say that Hector Blake is a character with whom any but only the sickest might identify. That\u2019s not my point about the cleverness of the unfolding story.<\/p>\n<p>Anvari\u2019s plot machinations keep us guessing until the very end. We\u2019re given a satisfying resolution that itself confirms that human beings are basically good and willing to risk everything to live up to that notion.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time \u201cI Came By\u201d shows why that effort itself is fraught with moral hazards, life-threatening risks and psychological complications.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Babak Anvari\u2019s \u201cI Came By\u201d is a taut, inventive crime thriller that impedes our expectations while satisfying our desire for suspense and surprise.
