Sanders\u2019 last public event was at the Arkansas Razorbacks football game on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders, who served as former President Donald Trump\u2019s spokeswoman until 2019, is running against Democratic nominee Chris Jones. She is the daughter of former Gov. Mike Huckabee.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders, who has shattered fundraising records in the race, is heavily favored in the predominantly Republican state of Arkansas. The state\u2019s current Republican governor, Asa Hutchinson, is leaving office in January due to term limits.<\/p>\n<p>A doctor for Sanders said in a statement that he expected her to be back on her feet within the next 24 hours. Dr. John R. Sims, a surgeon at CARTI Cancer Center in Little Rock, said Sanders will need adjuvant treatment with radioactive iodine and continued long follow up care.<\/p>\n<p>Sims said Sanders\u2019 cancer was a stage 1 papillary thyroid carcinoma, the most common type of thyroid cancer and said she has an \u201cexcellent\u201d prognosis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s fair to say she\u2019s now cancer free, and I don\u2019t anticipate any of this slowing her down,\u201d Sims said.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders was well known in Arkansas politics before launching her governor\u2019s bid, going back to when<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LITTLE ROCK, Ark.\u2014Former White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, who is running for governor in Arkansas, underwent surgery Friday for thyroid cancer.
