And in Atlantic City, as in so much of the rest of the United States, that hierarchy reflects a bitter legacy of racism and residential segregation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pilon writes of Cyril and Ruth Harvey, \u201cfriends of Raiford\u2019s who played a key role in popularizing the game,\u201d that they lived on expensive Pennsylvania Avenue but had \u201cpreviously lived on Ventnor Avenue, one of the yellow properties that represented some of Atlantic City\u2019s wealthier neighborhoods, with their high walls and fences and racial covenants that excluded Black citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Harveys employed a Black maid named Clara Watson,\u201d he notes. \u201cShe lived on Baltic Avenue in a low-income, Black neighborhood, not far from Mediterranean Avenue. On the Monopoly board, those are priced cheapest, at $60.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After quoting Temple University history professor Bryant Simon stating, \u201cAtlantic City, like all mass resorts, manufactured and sold an easily consumed and widely shared fantasy,\u201d Pilon continues, \u201cAround the time that Monopoly was taking hold in Atlantic City, ballots there were marked \u2018W\u2019 for white voters and \u2018C\u2019 for \u2018colored\u2019 voters, Simon said. It would take countless demonstrations and protests and a long struggle by the city\u2019s Black residents to secure their civil rights, but the Monopoly board records a world of ubiquitous racism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pilon notes there were other versions of Monopoly that featured other cities, noting, \u201cpeople localized the boards to reflect their own communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of the Atlantic City Monopoly board, Pilon writes, \u201cThe board didn\u2019t just record exclusion and discrimination; it also hinted at the dynamic life of the diverse city where the game was played. The city\u2019s thriving Black business community centered on Kentucky Avenue, often known as \u2018Ky. at the curb.\u2019 \u2026 Farther down the board, restaurants run by Chinese Americans thrived on Oriental Avenue and Jewish delis could be found in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turning to the current era, Pilon states, \u201cThe impact of the decisions made during Monopoly\u2019s heyday is still felt today. Atlantic City is a \u2018redlined epicure\u2019 of the state,\u00a0according to the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, and it leads the state in foreclosures. The rate of white homeownership in New Jersey stands at 77 percent, but Black homeownership is scarcely half of that, at 41 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pilon\u00a0concludes, \u201ccommonplace objects tucked into our closets and handed down from one generation to another can tell us important things about our past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, those objects \u201creflect patterns that many Americans, particularly those who have benefited from them, don\u2019t even think to question, arrangements that have been naturalized over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonopoly still offers us the chance to understand how deep-seated those injustices can be,\u201d she writes. \u201cWe simply have to look closely enough at the board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In September 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ms-monopoly-corrects-original-board-games-gender-emily-zanotti\/\">The Daily Wire<\/a> reported of a new version of Monopoly created to please feminists:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/09\/10\/us\/hasbro-ms-monopoly-trnd\/index.html\">CNN reports that \u201cMs. Monopoly<\/a>,\u201d unveiled this week, will celebrate \u201cwomen\u2019s empowerment\u201d by reconfiguring the classic Monopoly board to be more \u201cfemale-friendly,\u201d including bumping the pay of female players who make it all the way around the board\u2019s list of properties by rewarding them with extra pay. The theory is that women make only around $.70 for every dollar men make in the real world, so Monopoly will give them an advantage.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cUnlike the classic game, women will collect 240 Monopoly bucks when they pass \u2018go,\u2019 while male players will collect the usual 200.
