El-Erian, president of Queens\u2019 College in Cambridge, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/expert-warns-railroad-strike-would-cause-real-damage-in-the-us-economy_4731394.html\">had warned<\/a> that a rail strike would deliver another \u201cstagflationary shock\u201d to an economy already being hammered by red-hot inflation.<\/p>\n<p>Labor Secretary Martin Walsh brokered the all-night labor contract talks, with the agreement giving rail workers \u201cbetter pay, improved working conditions, and peace of mind around their health care costs,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n<p>While the details of the agreement weren\u2019t immediately available, a key issue was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-railroad\">railroad<\/a> companies\u2019 workplace attendance policies that unions said were unreasonably harsh in penalizing workers for taking days off when sick or attending family emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis abusive and punitive attendance policy is breaking apart families and causing locomotive engineers and other railroaders to come to work dangerously fatigued,\u201d the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen <a href=\"https:\/\/ble-t.org\/news\/statement-by-blet-national-president-dennis-pierce-on-bnsfs-announced-changes-to-its-hi-viz-punitive-attendance-policy\/\">said in a statement<\/a> on May 16.<\/p>\n<p>Biden, who faced political pressure over the looming strike, characterized the agreement as a win-win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe agreement is also a victory for railway companies who will be able to retain and recruit more workers for an industry that will continue to be part of the backbone of the American economy for decades to come,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Prior lack of progress on the labor talks prompted the Biden administration to establish an emergency board to make proposals to break the impasse.
