Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) introduced legislation on Thursday that makes the distribution of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-fentanyl\">fentanyl<\/a> resulting in death punishable by federal felony murder charges.<\/p>\n<p>This comes as the crisis on the southern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-border\">border<\/a> continues to plague the country under the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>Known as the Felony Murder for Deadly Fentanyl Distribution Act (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/public\/_cache\/files\/7aed3baf-a0dd-4e2a-9325-51992cd2bca0\/AF3F07B1E09BBB9151F87811DC432065.felony-murder-for-deadly-fentanyl-distribution-act---final.pdf\">pdf<\/a>), the bill amends the U.S. code, to punish the distribution of fentanyl resulting in death as felony murder.\u00a0Such an offense is equivalent to premeditated murder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhoever is guilty of murder in the first degree by distributing fentanyl shall be punished by death or by imprisonment for life,\u201d reads the bill.<\/p>\n<p>The bill comes as the synthetic opioid becomes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/heroine-overdose-deaths-halved-as-fentanyl-deaths-tripled-over-5-years_4714102.html\">leading cause of overdose death<\/a> among Americans aged 18-45 and as drug dealers increasingly target children and young people with candy-colored, yet potentially deadly fentanyl pills. The highly addictive pain killer is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/stopoverdose\/fentanyl\/index.html\">up to 50 times<\/a> more potent than heroin, as just 2 milligrams can be fatal depending on a person\u2019s body size, tolerance, and past usage.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/pressroom\/nchs_press_releases\/2022\/202205.htm\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>, fentanyl overdoses accounted for over 71,000 death in 2021, up from about 58,000 in 2020, with an even sharper increase expected in 2022.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/09\/16\/GettyImages-1242410971-1200x800.jpg\"><\/a> \u201cThe Faces of Fentanyl\u201d wall, which displays photos of Americans who died from a fentanyl overdose, at the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) headquarters in Arlington, Va., on July 13, 2022. This bill would make drug dealers pay the price for selling deadly fentanyl,\u201d Rubio said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/press-releases?id=00229CDC-F831-4789-801E-7499E7287879\">Sept. 15 press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On that same day in Los Angeles, a\u00a015-year-old boy was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/2-teens-arrested-in-probe-of-fentanyl-overdoses-at-high-school-in-hollywood_4734642.html\">arrested<\/a> on suspicion of manslaughter for allegedly<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
