Though the wolf was able to escape, its tail was left frozen in the ice.<\/p>\n<p>That story was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/let-the-wolfs-tail-freeze-putin-doubles-down-on-halting-natural-gas-flow-to-western-europe\">recounted<\/a> to the world by none other than Russian President Vladimir Putin last week. In his version, the wolf was Western Europe.<\/p>\n<p>In retaliation over the European Union\u2019s support of Ukraine against the Russian invasion, officials in Moscow recently severed natural gas shipments through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline \u2014 a move that will likely be devastating for much of the continent. Germany, the largest economy in Europe, imported roughly 55 percent of its gas from Russia before the invasion of Ukraine, although it has since reduced its dependence to 35 percent.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s rather surprising that Russia, a country with comparatively little technological prowess or advanced industry, could hold the world\u2019s third largest economy hostage. Even beyond Germany, the entire European Union \u2014 which is also home to France and Italy, the world\u2019s seventh and ninth most powerful economies \u2014 is making a last-ditch effort to scrape together power reserves to warm homes and operate businesses through the looming winter.<\/p>\n<p>The missing piece of the puzzle \u2014 the wolf\u2019s tail caught in the ice \u2014 is Europe\u2019s self-immolating energy policies. The European Union, in accordance with the European Green Deal and the Paris Climate Agreement, abides by the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/clima\/eu-action\/climate-strategies-targets\/2050-long-term-strategy_en\">official goal<\/a> of becoming \u201ca climate-neutral society\u201d by 2050. As governments regulate oil production while inexplicably shutting down nuclear power plants, political leaders in Europe have poured billions into solar, wind, and hydropower infrastructure in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>The latter solutions, however, are not so reliable and can be crippled by unpredictable natural phenomena such as clouds, a windless day, or low rainfall. As European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/european-union-intends-to-flatten-the-curve-for-electricity-use\">forced to admit<\/a> last week, drought conditions in the region have severely reduced hydroelectric power generation capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Her solution is to \u201cflatten the curve\u201d (sound familiar?) in the interest of reducing energy consumption during periods of peak demand. Though a concrete policy for the broader European Union is still forthcoming, multiple nations have already imposed energy usage restrictions or warned that such policies could be necessary through the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>In Spain and Switzerland, officials have respectively mandated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/switzerland-may-jail-people-who-turn-heat-above-66-degrees-this-winter\">thermostat levels<\/a> remain no lower than a temperate 80 degrees during the summer and no higher than a balmy 66 degrees during the winter. If citizens of Switzerland dare to inch the temperature warmer, they could face fines above $3,000 per day or face the rest of the winter \u2014 and the next two winters as well \u2014 freezing in a prison cell.<\/p>\n<p>In France, officials called for a 10 percent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/french-president-calls-for-10-cut-in-energy-use-will-ration-power-as-a-last-resort\">voluntary reduction<\/a> in the nation\u2019s energy usage, with mandatory consumption limits on the table as a \u201clast resort.\u201d In Germany, officials are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/germany-reverts-to-burning-coal-will-keep-two-nuclear-plants-open-ahead-of-winter-months\">pausing plans<\/a> to shutter two of the nation\u2019s three remaining nuclear facilities as a handful of ever-dreaded coal power plants sputter back to life.<\/p>\n<p>As energy prices increase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/back-to-the-dark-ages-tucker-carlson-details-europes-self-induced-energy-crisis\">more than tenfold<\/a>, demand for wood has soared, leading to the rapid harvesting of ancient forests. Companies in Poland, Estonia, Romania, and Hungary are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/europeans-resort-to-burning-wood-amid-desperate-search-for-energy-now-greta-thunberg-wants-to-limit-that-too\">reducing timber into wood pellets<\/a> \u2014 a fuel source less efficient and more dirty than coal \u2014 and exporting them to Italy, Germany, Austria, and other Western European nations. Climate activist Greta Thunberg chastised her desperate comrades for daring to inflict such environmental degradation.<\/p>\n<p>While Americans may be able to watch the crisis unfold from adequately heated houses across the pond, they will by no means be immune from fallout in the European economy \u2014 including the financial sector, which may find itself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/european-banks-brace-for-energy-rations-that-could-threaten-financial-system-rush-to-test-diesel-fueled-backup-generators\">running<\/a> on diesel-fueled generators in a few months \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/well-its-a-risk-janet-yellen-admits-gas-prices-could-spike-again-this-year\">surging worldwide oil prices<\/a> emerging from the Russian invasion.<\/p>\n<p>Even more so, Americans have a prophetic witness much closer to home. California, the nation\u2019s haven for experimental green energy, announced the rollback of all new gas car sales by 2035 \u2014 mere days before officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/california-asks-residents-to-avoid-charging-electric-vehicles-due-to-blackout-risk-days-after-unveiling-new-gas-car-ban\">asked<\/a> residents to avoid charging electric vehicles during peak hours in the interest of averting grid failure.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, like their counterparts in Europe, our leaders are wholeheartedly embracing such policies. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/buttigieg-interested-in-california-ban-on-new-gas-cars-as-he-weighs-a-national-policy\">said<\/a> that he is \u201cinterested\u201d in the California ban and affirmed that any nationalized policy must roll out \u201cquickly enough to help us beat climate change.\u201d More broadly, the Biden administration has established the goal of achieving net-zero emissions across the economy by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>Even if Western Europe and the United States manage to cut emissions by shivering through the winter or sweating through the summer, nations like China and India are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/wall-street-journal-blasts-joe-biden-john-kerry-for-pushing-self-destructive-green-energy-policies-while-china-burns-more-coal\">expanding fossil fuel production<\/a> as rapidly as possible.
