Hank Johnson smeared all parents who advocate for their children at school board meetings as \u201cMAGA Republicans\u201d who \u201cdescend[ed] on their school board meetings\u201d in a \u201ccoordinated attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople on the local level at affected school board meetings, they won\u2019t forget the MAGA Republicans descending on their school board meetings after January 6 \u2014 like January 6,\u201d Johnson stated. \u201cIt was a coordinated attack happening across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"KoBHSJmGv\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA):<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People at school board meetings will never forget MAGA Republicans descending on their school board meetings just like they did on January 6. It was a coordinated attack happening across the country.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8iZnSwRn94\">pic.twitter.com\/8iZnSwRn94<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Greg Price (@greg_price11) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/greg_price11\/status\/1570095733650358283?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 14, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The parents to whom Johnson is referring garnered national attention after they showed up peacefully to give public comment and protest at their children\u2019s school board meetings in response to draconian Covid-19 mandates, critical race theory, and wildly inappropriate sexual content in public schools. Unlike a few rioters who were present on Jan. 6, parents at school board meetings almost universally followed rules for public comment and protested without bucking established rules and laws.<\/p>\n<p>Asra Q. Nomani, a mom from Fairfax County, Virginia, and a senior contributor at The Federalist, is one of the parents who spoke up. Nomani <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/05\/18\/how-shaming-my-school-boards-racism-cost-me-my-job-but-not-my-stand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stood<\/a> in front of her school board in March to describe the \u201cnew racism\u201d pushed by the school system directed toward Asian Americans like herself, \u201cwhose children\u2019s success in K-12 schools belie the notion that systemic racism oppresses all minorities.\u201d Like thousands of other parents, she exercised her freedoms of speech and assembly nonviolently.<\/p>\n<p>Former Disney star Leigh-Allyn Baker is another parent who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/entertainment\/former-disney-star-leigh-allyn-bakers-anti-mask-speech-ruckus-school-board-meeting-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">took<\/a> to her children\u2019s school board meeting, to voice her opinions against the school\u2019s mask mandate. In addition to concerns about children not being able to properly \u201cbreathe oxygen\u201d through masks, her main point was this: \u201cThe real part of the clown show is that you all think that you actually have the authority to mandate this.\u201d Baker was not violent while addressing the school board, nor did she start a riot or \u201cinsurrection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But even after Democrats spent months <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/08\/27\/cnn-chyron-on-kenosha-fiery-but-mostly-peaceful-protests-after-police-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">describing<\/a> fiery riots perpetrated by their own ideologues as \u201cmostly peaceful protests,\u201d they were more than willing \u2014 as Johnson did \u2014 to smear these parents for daring to speak out against local tyrants.<\/p>\n<p>The National School Boards Association went so far as to equate these parents\u2019 peaceful assembly and speech \u201cto a form of domestic terrorism and hate crimes\u201d in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/education\/nsba-apologizes-for-letter-calling-parents-domestic-terrorists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thefdrlst.wpengine.com\/2021\/09\/30\/leftist-school-boards-association-begs-biden-to-use-domestic-terrorism-laws-to-target-concerned-parents\/\">asking<\/a> the Biden administration and federal law enforcement to go after parents using domestic terrorism laws. Attorney General Merrick Garland used the letter as an excuse to sic the FBI and state attorneys on parents, even though most of the examples in the NSBA letter never warranted arrests or charges even at the local level. It was soon revealed that Biden\u2019s Education Secretary Miguel Cardona appeared to have <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/01\/12\/biden-education-secretary-planting-nsba-letter-takes-a-page-from-russia-collusion-hoax-playbook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commissioned<\/a> the letter, and the NSBA issued an <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/10\/23\/nsba-apologizes-for-working-with-biden-administration-to-target-parents-as-domestic-terrorists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apology<\/a> for sending it. Democrats like Johnson, however, are still spreading its lies. <\/p>\n<p>Johnson\u2019s statement also exposes Democrats\u2019 continued distortion and obsession over the events at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. There <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/01\/03\/peaceful-demands-for-secure-elections-do-not-constitute-insurrection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">were<\/a> some people who did riot and forcibly enter the Capitol almost two years ago. But there were also thousands of Americans who peacefully protested in Washington D.C. that day, concerned about the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election results. Unfortunately, Democrats refuse to make this distinction, instead lumping all people there that day (and indeed, all of their political opponents) into the category of \u201cinsurrectionist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson\u2019s baseless accusations and comparison of concerned parents to rioters are false and damaging, and show just how exhaustively Democrats will use \u201cJan. 6\u201d smears as a political cudgel. All that his comments achieve is misconstruing what is actually happening at school board meetings and furthering the divide in our nation.  <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Sophia is an intern at The Federalist and a student at Le Moyne College.
