Economic interests within the government, according to this theory, viewed King&#8217;s labor activism as an intolerable threat to the capitalist system. There is no evidence to support this theory, nor to suggest that James Earl Ray, who was convicted in King&#8217;s 1968 assassination, was motivated to kill King because of his support for the labor movement.<\/p>\n<p>The vice president&#8217;s allusion to a government plot against King puts her in company with conspiracy theorists and radical ideologues. William Pepper, a lawyer who frequently headlines 9\/11 conspiracy events\u00a0and believes the assassination of Robert Kennedy was a conspiracy, claims King&#8217;s assassination was coordinated by the FBI, CIA, and members of organized crime. Marxist groups, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marxist.com\/assassination-king-malcolm-x140606.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Marxist Tendency<\/a>\u00a0and publications like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialist.net\/the-assassination-of-martin-luther-king.htm#:~:text=It%20is%20clear%20from%20reading%20and%20listening%20to%20their%20final%20speeches%20that%20they%20had%20both%20evolved%20similar%20conclusions%20as%20to%20capitalism%27s%20role%20in%20the%20maintenance%20of%20racism.%20That%20is%20why%20they%20were%20neutralised.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Socialist Appeal<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenleft.org.au\/content\/martin-luther-king-jr-took-capitalism-and-was-killed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Green Left<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0have also charged that the U.S. government murdered King.<\/p>\n<p>A spokeswoman for the vice president did not return a request for comment on the parallels between Harris&#8217;s remarks and conspiracy rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p>Harris is the latest Biden administration official\u00a0to push an\u00a0unfounded conspiracy theory. Nina Jankowicz, who ran the now-defunct Disinformation Governance Board, and former Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff, who advised the board, both suggested without evidence that the <em>New York Post<\/em>\u2018s story on Hunter Biden&#8217;s laptop was a bogus &#8220;Russian influence op.&#8221; The\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>\u2018s reporting has since been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/16\/us\/politics\/hunter-biden-tax-bill-investigation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">authenticated<\/a>\u00a0by other outlets, including the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Harris is not the first prominent figure to advance this conspiracy theory. Many of King&#8217;s relatives believe\u00a0he was murdered because of his focus on economic activism, including his support for striking sanitation workers in Memphis just prior to his assassination and his plans to organize a union-supported &#8220;army of the poor&#8221; to march on Washington, D.C.\u00a0King&#8217;s son Dexter <a href=\"https:\/\/ratical.org\/ratville\/JFK\/MLKctPC.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> his father was killed &#8220;because he challenged the establishment&#8221; and &#8220;talked about dealing with poverty, by taking poor people to Washington. \u2026 He became too powerful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 1999, members of King&#8217;s family brought a civil suit\u00a0against Loyd Jowers,\u00a0who\u00a0claimed he participated in\u00a0a\u00a0conspiracy\u00a0to assassinate King. The jury ruled in the family&#8217;s favor and concluded the government did conspire to kill King. But some criticized the verdict for reaching that judgment based on inconclusive evidence\u2014because the government was not a defendant in the suit, it offered no counter-evidence to the allegations in the trial, and inconsistencies in Jowers&#8217;s testimony went unchallenged.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department under the Clinton administration took up its own investigation following the civil trial and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/crt\/vii-king-v-jowers-conspiracy-allegations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a>\u00a0Jowers&#8217;s allegations not credible based on contradictions in his and other witnesses&#8217; testimony. Jowers&#8217;s sisters, who initially corroborated his story, later\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-srv\/national\/longterm\/mlk\/memphis\/memphis2.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recanted<\/a>\u00a0and claimed he made up the tale in hopes of selling the story.<\/p>\n<p>James Lawson, a civil rights activist who worked with King, <a href=\"https:\/\/ratical.org\/ratville\/JFK\/MLKACT\/MLKACTvol04.html#p386\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">testified<\/a> in the trial that he believed King was killed in a conspiracy because his calls to pressure Washington &#8220;to eradicate poverty,&#8221; among other statements, &#8220;raised the anxiety levels in the White House and elsewhere across Washington.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have no doubt,&#8221; Lawson <a href=\"http:\/\/www.precaution.org\/lib\/mlk_assassination_another_verdict.000315.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> said of King&#8217;s role in the Memphis sanitation workers&#8217; strike and his plans to march on Washington, &#8220;that the government viewed all this seriously enough to plan his assassination.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because he took on those forces, powerful economic forces that dominated politics in this land, they killed him,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/ratical.org\/ratville\/JFK\/MLKctPC.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Pepper, the conspiracy theorist who represented the King family in that trial. &#8220;They still exist today, the forces of evil, the powerful economic forces that dominate the government.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gerald Posner, an investigative journalist who wrote a book on King&#8217;s assassination, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1999\/12\/09\/us\/memphis-jury-sees-conspiracy-in-martin-luther-king-s-killing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> after the trial, &#8220;It distresses me greatly that the legal system was used in such a callous and farcical manner in [the trial].
