During his Tuesday testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee, Zatko said that Twitter collects user phone numbers, current and past email addresses, current and past IP addresses, and the web browser from which the user connects, among other data.<\/p>\n<p>He added that every engineer at the firm could potentially gain access to the data through their access to internal production systems. \u201cIf they wanted to root around in the data and find it, they could, and some have,\u201d Zatko told lawmakers, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/tech\/live-news\/peiter-zatko-hearing-twitter-privacy-security-09-13-2022\/index.html\">report<\/a> from CNN.<\/p>\n<p>Zatko also claimed in his whistleblower report that one or more current Twitter employees is working for a foreign intelligence agency. He explained during his testimony that executives were \u201cunwilling to put the effort in\u201d to root out the individual.<\/p>\n<p>According to Zatko, one executive allegedly told him: \u201cWell, since we already have one, what is the problem if we have more? Let\u2019s keep growing the office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers are currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/lauded-federal-data-privacy-bill-has-a-carveout-for-government-surveillance\">debating<\/a> a piece of legislation called the American Data Privacy and Protection Act, which would adopt a \u201cdata minimization\u201d approach toward collection of user information such that only the data \u201creasonably necessary and proportionate\u201d to specific applications \u2014 including user authentication and fraud prevention \u2014 are procured. The bill, however, has a carveout for entities gathering user data for government purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Zatko\u2019s testimony also comes as Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk attempts to cancel a deal that would require him to purchase Twitter at a valuation of $44 billion. The world\u2019s richest man recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/heres-the-latest-in-the-elon-musk-twitter-legal-feud\">asserted<\/a> that the true number of fake accounts on the platform could be as high as 33% rather than the company\u2019s reported 5%, with a lower number of monetizable daily active users potentially justifying a lower valuation.<\/p>\n<p>In his whistleblower report, Zatko claimed that Twitter executives lacked the resources or motivation necessary to determine the true number of fake accounts on the platform. Last week, Delaware Chancery Court Chancellor Kathaleen McCormick <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/elon-musk-scores-win-in-court-battle-against-twitter\">granted<\/a> attorneys representing Musk permission to use Zatko\u2019s testimony in their case. A trial to determine the status of the acquisition deal is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/its-happening-five-day-trial-date-set-for-elon-musk-twitter-dispute\">scheduled<\/a> for October 17.<\/p>\n<p>While Zatko\u2019s testimony was broadcasted live on Tuesday morning, Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1569699453786898432?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1569699453786898432%7Ctwgr%5E37441ef0734be0e8ea2316c23a92f5b868dabe0d%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2Ftech%2Flive-news%2Fpeiter-zatko-hearing-twitter-privacy-security-09-13-2022%2Findex.html\">tweeted<\/a> an emoji of movie theater popcorn, apparently indicating that he was enjoying the direction of the proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, Zatko testified that he only took the \u201cpersonal and professional risk\u201d of issuing a whistleblower report because he deemed the action \u201cnecessary\u201d in light of dangers posed to individual users and national security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not make my whistleblower disclosures out of spite or to harm Twitter; far from that,\u201d he explained. \u201cI continue to believe in the mission of the company and root for its success.
