During an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxla.com\/news\/the-issue-is-podcast-gavin-newsom-pete-buttigieg-and-melissa-giller\">interview<\/a> with Fox 11 Los Angeles, Buttigieg argued that a rapid transition to electric cars is required to effectively combat climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s interesting to see how the states are trying to go above and beyond what we\u2019re doing at the federal level,\u201d Buttigieg commented. \u201cI\u2019m really interested in these developments, while we continue to set a national policy that\u2019s the baseline for all of this. We need to move in the direction of electric vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>California unveiled the new benchmarks days before the Golden State requested that residents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/california-asks-residents-to-avoid-charging-electric-vehicles-due-to-blackout-risk-days-after-unveiling-new-gas-car-ban\">lower energy usage<\/a> during peak hours in the interest of averting power grid failure. Among other actions, officials asked that citizens refrain from charging electric vehicles. Prominent policymakers and industry leaders, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/civilization-will-crumble-elon-musk-issues-dire-warning-about-rapid-shift-to-green-energy\">warned<\/a> that the rushed adoption of renewable energy solutions could induce economic harm.<\/p>\n<p>Buttigieg nevertheless argued that speed is necessary for a robust electric vehicle policy. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to make sure that this happens quickly enough to help us beat climate change,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to make sure it happens affordably enough that\u2019s it not just wealthy people, but low-income people who most need those gas savings if they can afford the EVs in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Washington, Massachusetts, and Virginia will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/two-more-states-follow-californias-ban-on-new-gas-cars\">follow<\/a> the California Air Resources Board regulations in accordance with previously enacted legislation, although Republicans in the latter state are attempting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ridiculous-edict-virginia-gov-glenn-youngkin-blasts-californias-gas-car-phase-out\">overturn<\/a> the statute.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Biden administration has established the goal of procuring only 100% zero-emission light-duty vehicles by 2027 and will extend the same standard to all vehicles in the federal government\u2019s fleet by 2035, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/06\/09\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-proposes-new-standards-for-national-electric-vehicle-charging-network\/\">fact sheet<\/a> from the White House. Meanwhile, the administration has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/12\/13\/fact-sheet-the-biden-harris-electric-vehicle-charging-action-plan\/\">set<\/a> the \u201cambitious target\u201d of ensuring that electric vehicles constitute 50% of car sales in the United States by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>The Inflation Reduction Act \u2014 which contains $369 billion for climate initiatives \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/energy-sec-granholm-families-should-use-ev-tax-credits-weatherize-their-homes-finance-solar-panels-to-cope-with-inflation\">includes<\/a> $7,500 tax credits for new electric vehicles. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/energy-secretary-lays-out-the-only-way-to-avoid-high-gas-prices-and-its-not-producing-more-oil\">urged<\/a> a transition away from gas cars among Americans experiencing high prices at the pump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe real truth is that as long as our nation remains overly reliant on oil and fossil fuels, we will feel these price shocks again,\u201d Granholm said. \u201cThis is not going to be the last time. The next time there\u2019s a war, the next time there\u2019s a pandemic or another hurricane, these extreme weather events we are experiencing \u2014 they will impact the access that we have to fossil fuels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many developed countries are indeed shifting their energy portfolios toward renewables and away from conventional sources.
