She said she will not reimburse city taxpayers for her first-class upgrades to France and Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll expenses incurred doing business on behalf of the city of New Orleans, will not be reimbursed to the city of New Orleans,\u201d Cantrell said. \u201cOne thing is clear: I do my job, and I will continue to it with do it with distinction, with dignity and integrity every step of the way. And so, that\u2019s what I have to say on that.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"EfIMbpwy8TTaH1mDgKQuzFhrcRgdnjCjmqhxSUv2J9lLWiQpw3ss3P7ao50EtK2MyNO7FXRtbYP401HuNL9XicfkBADxrVVZC\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">At yesterday\u2019s press conference, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FOX8NOLA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@FOX8NOLA<\/a> was the only station that asked Mayor LaToya Cantrell about whether or not she will reimburse thousands of dollars to the city for her travel upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s her full statement: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/swA2flFIkc\">pic.twitter.com\/swA2flFIkc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Andr\u00e9s Fuentes (@news_fuentes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/news_fuentes\/status\/1568206255990210560?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 9, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Cantrell said the purchase of first-class tickets while staff flew in economy was justified because planes are unsafe for black women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs all women know, our health and safety are often disregarded and we are left to navigate alone,\u201d Cantrell added. \u201cAnyone who wants to question how I protect myself just doesn\u2019t understand the world black women walk in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11200999\/New-Orleans-mayor-says-flying-economy-unsafe-black-women-refuses-repay-30k-taxpayer-cash.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According <\/a>to The Daily Mail, \u201cCantrell spent around $10,000 on her own flat bed seat and blew a similar amount on a first-class return to France earlier this year \u2013 while her aides traveled in coach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cantrell said the trips to France for a collective $40,000 were conducted out of respect for the city\u2019s heritage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re talking about France, from which we\u2019ve come, meaning part of the fabric of the City Of New Orleans. You\u2019re talking about France, that has an ambassador living in the city of New Orleans,\u201d Cantrell said at an August press conference. <\/p>\n<p>The high-end trips to Europe are far from isolated episodes of the mayor spending taxpayer dollars to finance first-class travel while staffers fly coach for substantially less.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwltv.com\/article\/news\/local\/orleans\/new-orleans-mayor-latoya-cantrell-says-she-wont-reimburse-city-for-travel-upgrades\/289-1347ee50-8833-4ff9-8f2f-0d5de40a58a6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According <\/a>to 4WWL, a local CBS affiliate, Cantrell charged more than $2,800 to constituent taxpayers for a first-class flight to Miami for a U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting in March. New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Shaun Ferguson, meanwhile, paid $342 on the same trip. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOthers paid $677,\u201d the local outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>In January, Cantrell spent more than $2,300 on a first-class ticket to Washington D.C. for another meeting with the U.S. Conference of Mayors while \u201cthe rest of her entourage paid $250.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist.
