If the credit card companies deem any of those transactions suspect, they will report them to local law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Visa, Mastercard, and AmEx all adopted the new standards on Saturday shortly after the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which is known for setting standards for Western business transactions, approved the change regarding gun store purchases on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The ISO\u2019s decision came at the behest of anti-gun activists and Democrat lawmakers, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who just one week prior, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warren.senate.gov\/oversight\/letters\/senator-warren-and-representative-dean-urge-bank-ceos-to-adopt-new-code-for-gun-and-ammunition-retailers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demanded<\/a> financial CEOs be their eyes and ears when it comes to \u201ccertain types of suspicious activities including straw purchases and unlawful bulk purchases that could be used in the commission of domestic terrorist acts or gun trafficking schemes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMass shooters have repeatedly financed deadly massacres using credit cards, and Bank CEOs need to step up to save lives,\u201d Warren wrote. \u201cFinancial institutions and payment networks, such as Visa, MasterCard, and American Express can and should do everything they can to help law enforcement prevent some mass shootings by identifying suspicious gun purchases through the implementation of this new code.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even before Democrats decided to pressure credit card companies into doing their bidding on guns, Amalgamated Bank President and CEO Priscilla Sims Brown demanded financial institutions surveil the firearm industry using merchant category codes. Her initial plea to the ISO in June 2021 was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/07\/13\/bank-ceo-on-why-we-can-and-should-track-gun-purchases-on-cards-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rejected<\/a>, based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/bank-credit-cards-suspect-gun-ammo-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recommendations<\/a> from Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. But since Amalgamated Bank, the largest union-owned bank in the U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amalgamatedbank.com\/news\/amalgamated-bank-petition-new-code-gun-and-ammunition-stores-has-been-approved-international\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">works closely<\/a> with the ISO, it was no surprise that, shortly after Brown\u2019s ongoing push to make credit companies the Big Brother of gun sales was once again <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/07\/13\/bank-ceo-on-why-we-can-and-should-track-gun-purchases-on-cards-.html\">amplified by corporate media<\/a> in June of 2022, the ISO decided to adopt the new recommendations less than three months later. <\/p>\n<p>As Federalist Senior Legal Correspondent Margot Cleveland <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/04\/19\/how-mastercards-rules-against-child-pornographers-could-be-used-to-ban-conservatives-from-banking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> in her previous coverage of Mastercard and Visa, <a href=\"https:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2012\/10\/rogue-pharma-fake-av-vendors-feel-credit-card-crunch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">academic <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/cseweb.ucsd.edu\/~savage\/papers\/CCS12Priceless.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a> suggests that \u201cdisrupting the sale of illegal goods through the payment networks of Mastercard, Visa, and their partner banks appears more effective than legal action.\u201d That\u2019s because both Visa and Mastercard can \u201cpunish banks\u201d out of doing business with entities that the credit card companies classify as illegal or problematic.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s likely why even Democrats outside of Congress, including, New York Attorney General Letitia James, celebrated involving credit card companies in the left\u2019s push to crackdown on gun buyers and sellers as <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220911082951\/https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/09\/business\/dealbook\/guns-sales-code-iso.html\">\u201ca big victory.\u201d <\/a><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><\/figure>\n<p>Gun rights groups and activists including the National Rifle Association, however, condemned the credit card giants for caving to Democrats\u2019 and banks\u2019 attempts to regulate law-abiding gun sellers and buyers <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/loganclarkhall\/status\/1568797128704819200?s=20&amp;t=vZ6xuZ5Y4k-7z1KjJTpfuA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">using corporate America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ISO\u2019s decision to create a firearm specific code is nothing more than a capitulation to anti-gun politicians and activists bent on eroding the rights of law-abiding Americans one transaction at a time,\u201d an NRA spokesman said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/gun-sales-credit-card-code-visa-mastercard-amex-2022-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a> this weekend. \u201cThis is not about tracking or prevention or any virtuous motivation \u2014 it\u2019s about creating a national registry of gun owners.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and co-producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
