Berman\u2019s removal came after a public showdown with then-Attorney General <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/william-barr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Barr<\/a> and raised concerns among several lawmakers, with some <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/jerry-nadler-says-house-judiciary-committee-has-begun-the-process-of-subpoenaing-william-barr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seeking to investigate<\/a> the matter further. <\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/former-manhattan-attorney-pressured-prosecute-john-kerry-book\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EX-US ATTORNEY WAS PRESSURED TO PROSECUTE JOHN KERRY: BOOK<\/a><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur chief of security apologized for doing it so abruptly, explaining, &#8216;I was told to get you out of the office immediately,\u2019\u201d <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/09\/12\/trump-geoffrey-berman-book-manhattan-attorney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Berman wrote<\/a> in <i>Holding the Line,<\/i> according to<i> Axios. <\/i>\u201cBut I did not leave with a sense of triumph. What I felt \u2014 and continue to feel \u2014 is worry &#8230; [It] is important to understand how fragile the system is and how vulnerable it can be when powerful people attempt to abuse it for political gain.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The details offer a glimpse into what was happening behind the scenes as Barr and Berman publicly contradicted each other on the circumstances surrounding his departure. <\/p>\n<p>The former attorney general initially suggested that Berman was <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/ousted-manhattan-federal-prosecutor-testifies-barr-repeatedly-pressured-him-to-resign\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resigning from his post,<\/a> only to be met with a <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SDNYnews\/status\/1274178732476059650?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1274178732476059650%7Ctwgr%5E22ca85910a5bda0b12cc59c086526d7c65f24652%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.npr.org%2F2020%2F06%2F20%2F881148365%2Fgeoffrey-berman-u-s-attorney-who-prosecuted-trump-allies-says-he-wont-quit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement from Berman<\/a> himself that he had \u201cno intention of resigning\u201d and that his \u201cinvestigations [would] move forward without delay or interruption.\u201d The next day, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/standoff-manhattan-us-attorney-geoffrey-berman-wont-resign-after-barr-announces-ouster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barr announced<\/a> Berman\u2019s termination. <\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>Despite Barr naming Trump in his statement, the former president sought to distance himself from the decision, later telling reporters, \u201cThat\u2019s his department, not my department,&#8221; <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/06\/20\/881148365\/geoffrey-berman-u-s-attorney-who-prosecuted-trump-allies-says-he-wont-quit\">according to NPR<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Berman had led several high-profile investigations into the former president&#8217;s allies, including Trump attorney Michael Cohen who ultimately pleaded guilty to campaign finance crimes and lying to Congress, according to the outlet.
