Its newly adopted merchant code will likely pressure the banks it partners with to do the same. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing ISO\u2019s decision to establish a new merchant category code, Visa will proceed with next steps, while ensuring we protect all legal commerce on the Visa network in accordance with our long-standing rules,&#8221; Visa said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>MasterCard committed to the new code, applying it to its <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/s25.q4cdn.com\/479285134\/files\/doc_financials\/2021\/q1\/1Q21-Supplemental-Operational-Performance-Data.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">249 million credit cards<\/a> in the United States and 725 million cards globally on Friday. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We now turn our focus to how it will be implemented by merchants and their banks as we continue to support lawful purchases on our network while protecting the privacy and decisions of individual cardholders,&#8221; a Mastercard spokesperson <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/exclusive-global-standards-body-approves-new-merchant-code-gun-sellers-2022-09-09\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>American Express also followed suit for its <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/s26.q4cdn.com\/747928648\/files\/doc_financials\/2020\/ar\/2020-Annual-Report-(1).pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">53.8 million U.S.-circulated credit cards<\/a> and 58.2 million worldwide. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are focused on ensuring that we have the right controls in place to meet our regulatory and fiduciary responsibilities, as well as prevent illegal activity on our network,&#8221; a spokesperson for American Express said. <\/p>\n<p><b><u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/u><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>This update to the merchant code comes over a week after Sen.
