However, Roberts pushed back on recent attacks against the legitimacy of the court itself, saying that disagreeing with an opinion on a controversial issue does not call into question the legitimacy of the court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe court has always decided controversial cases and decisions always have been subject to intense criticism and that is entirely appropriate,\u201d Roberts told attendees at the conference, via the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/09\/10\/chief-justice-john-roberts-defends-supreme-court-legitimacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a>. \u201cBut I don\u2019t understand the connection between the opinions people disagree with and the legitimacy of the Supreme Court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, all of our opinions are open to criticism,\u201d he added, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/09\/10\/supreme-court-roberts-legitimacy\/\">The\u00a0Washington Post<\/a>. \u201cIn fact, our members do a great job of criticizing some opinions from time to time. But simply because people disagree with an opinion is not a basis for criticizing the legitimacy of the court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roberts pointed out that the distinct purpose of the Supreme Court is to interpret the law without regard to political opinions or concerns. \u201cThat role doesn\u2019t change simply because people disagree with this opinion or that opinion or with a particular mode of jurisprudence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court took up a number of controversial cases and handed down several controversial decisions during its term earlier this year. In June, the court ruled that state-level restrictions on concealed carrying firearms are unconstitutional, in the case of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-scotus-strikes-down-new-york-concealed-carry-restrictions-restrictions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York State Rifle &#038; Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen<\/a>;\u00a0<\/em>then, the court ruled in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/united-states-supreme-court-overturns-roe-v-wade-leaves-abortion-restrictions-to-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>overturning\u00a0<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> and giving control of abortion back to the states; finally, the court ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency does not have the authority to set emissions caps on coal plants in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/supreme-court-rules-against-bidens-epa-says-agency-does-not-have-authority-to-regulate-carbon-dioxide-emissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">West Virginia v. The Environmental Protection Agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats and left-wing activists responded to those three rulings, especially the <em>Dobbs\u00a0<\/em>decision, by slandering the court as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/democrat-nancy-pelosi-demonizes-extremist-supreme-court-as-dhs-warns-of-terrorism-against-judges\">extremist<\/a>\u201d and saying the court \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/sen-elizabeth-warren-claimed-scotus-burned-legitimacy-in-roe-verdict-calls-for-adding-more-justices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set a torch<\/a>\u201d to its legitimacy, and calling for it to be reformed or for more justices to be put onto the bench.<\/p>\n<p>Roberts continued, warning about the dangers of allowing politics into the judiciary. \u201cIf the court doesn\u2019t retain its legitimate function of interpreting the constitution, I\u2019m not sure who would take up that mantle,\u201d he said, via the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/abortion-us-supreme-court-colorado-springs-john-roberts-government-and-politics-cdff7d291a37c3b8459e787421c633d2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Associated Press<\/a>. \u201cYou don\u2019t want the political branches telling you what the law is, and you don\u2019t want public opinion to be the guide of what the appropriate decision is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roberts\u2019 comments come after Vice President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/meet-the-press\/meetthepressblog\/vp-harris-attacks-activist-court-says-loss-rights-post-roe-led-sufferi-rcna47072\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kamala Harris<\/a> attacked the legitimacy of the Supreme Court in reaction to the Court\u2019s decision in\u00a0<em>Dobbs.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this is an activist court,\u201d Harris told Chuck Todd in a clip of an interview with NBC News\u2019 \u201cMeet the Press\u201d Friday. \u201cWe had an established right for almost half a century [abortion]\u2026 And this court took that constitutional right away, and we are suffering as a nation because of it.
