D\u2019Agostino in Albany wrote that New Hope succeeded on the merits of its First Amendment claim against the state.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New Hope Family Services Executive Director Kathy Jerman <a href=\"https:\/\/adfmedia.org\/case\/new-hope-family-services-v-poole\">said<\/a> every child deserves a home with a \u201cloving mother and father who are committed to each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt\u2019s regrettable that New York ever threatened to shut down our adoption services, through which we have placed more than 1,000 children with adoptive families since we began as an adoption agency in 1965,\u201d Jerman said. \u201cWe live in a diverse state, and we need more adoption providers, not fewer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The faith-based center\u2019s lawyer applauded the court\u2019s decision, adding that closing down an adoption provider for its religious beliefs \u201cneedlessly and unconstitutionally\u201d reduces the number of agencies willing to help and benefits no one \u2014 especially children.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe state\u2019s attempt to shutter New Hope did nothing other than violate core rights protected by the First Amendment\u2014the freedom to speak what you believe and the freedom to practice the teachings of your faith,\u201d Roger Brooks, senior counsel of the Alliance Defending Freedom, <a href=\"https:\/\/adfmedia.org\/case\/new-hope-family-services-v-poole\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/religion-new-york-lawsuits-gay-rights-84d80d7f89dfb4e13a587edb932d034e\">reports<\/a> the Office of Children and Family Services said in a prepared statement it was \u201cdeeply disappointed with the decision and maintains that discrimination on any basis should not be tolerated.
