You have to believe that she did knowing she was putting not just her volleyball future at risk but her college future as a student at Duke. She\u2019d be forever tarnished as a liar. One of the worst liars. You have to believe she then lied to her dad. Which is possible. Kids lie to their parents, but about this? But also \u2026 You\u2019d have to believe she would then let her father go on CNN and repeat that lie,\u201d the author wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Thus despite video evidence confirming that he engaged in no threatening or inappropriate behavior, a Utah Valley University student is banned from attending BYU sporting events for life after Duke sophomore volleyball player Rachel Richardson and her teammates accused him of hurling racial slurs at her during their match on Aug. 26. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to determine what Richardson believed she heard in a sporting center packed with a noisy, <a href=\"https:\/\/byucougars.com\/story\/w-volleyball\/1300541\/no-10-byu-takes-down-duke-front-record-home-crowd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">record-setting crowd<\/a>, but it\u2019s certainly not far-fetched to think CNN or any other corporate media outlet would let someone wielding a narrative the press is eager to amplify go on air without proper vetting. <\/p>\n<p>After all, it was the corporate media that perpetuated <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/18\/spygate-101-a-primer-on-the-russia-collusion-hoaxs-years-long-plot-to-take-down-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spygate<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/jussie-smollett\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jussie Smollett\u2019s<\/a> orchestrated hate-crime hoax, and the Border Patrol <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/07\/11\/we-finally-have-a-guilty-verdict-in-the-migrant-whipping-story-but-it-isnt-border-patrol-its-the-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cwhipping\u201d lies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Could Richardson have heard negative remarks while on the court? Maybe. Is there evidence to suggest that BYU fans launched racial slurs at her \u201cthroughout the entirety of the match\u201d as she, the media, and blue checkmarks suggested? Absolutely not. <\/p>\n<p>On the contrary, there\u2019s strong evidence to suggest that Richardson and Duke\u2019s hasty blame game and BYU\u2019s scramble to throw off accusations of harboring racism led to the targeting of an innocent man. <\/p>\n<h2>Blame Game<\/h2>\n<p>The Duke\/BYU controversy started like any viral incident when Richardson\u2019s godmother Lesa Pamplin, a candidate for county criminal court judge in Texas, tweeted from her now-private account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy Goddaughter is the only black starter for Dukes volleyball team,\u201d Pamplin wrote. \u201cWhile playing yesterday, she was called a [racial slur] every time she served. She was threatened by a white male that told her to watch her back going to the team bus. A police officer had to be put by their bench.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"488\" height=\"809\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Pamplin-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-278889\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Pamplin-1.png 488w, https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Pamplin-1-181x300.png 181w\"><\/figure>\n<p>Pamplin did not attend the game in question, but that didn\u2019t matter. By the time Richardson released <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BleacherReport\/status\/1563999032267112448?s=20&amp;t=_jAqkxjlAAgV2byOOMPvTw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">her own statement on Twitter<\/a> alleging that \u201cBoth officials and BYU coaching staff were made aware of the incident during the game, but failed to take the necessary steps \u2026 failed to adequately address the situation after the game,\u201d the anger for BYU and its fans was already ignited.<\/p>\n<p>These anecdotes of the alleged incident severely lacked evidence and corroboration, yet the corporate media and politicians who see virtue-signaling as an asset latched onto Richardson and her family\u2019s claims that <a href=\"https:\/\/abc11.com\/racial-slurs-duke-byu-volleyball-rachel-richardson-dad\/12178589\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than one BYU fan<\/a> taunted her using the n-word. <\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the allegations surfaced, BYU released a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BYUCougars\/status\/1563616547880329216?s=20&amp;t=eKmVcAHJqfJzD8Mwy7tmhQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a> announcing that after the game, a fan singled out by the Duke sideline for hurling racist taunts at Richardson was banned from all BYU athletic venues for life.<\/p>\n<p>Around that time, every corporate media outlet from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/08\/28\/1119848113\/byu-duke-volleyball-racism-fan-banned\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NPR<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/opinion\/msnbc-opinion\/byu-fan-called-duke-players-n-word-was-only-beginning-n1298434\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MSNBC<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/sports\/2022\/08\/29\/duke-volleyball-player-racial-slurs-father-intv-newday-vpx.cnn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNN<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2022\/08\/27\/byu-duke-volleyball-racist-incident\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ac_hutchens\/status\/1565949381362085888?s=20&amp;t=kgBfMkBG8BlL6XUCANNRew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more<\/a> published stories definitively stating that at least one BYU fan hurled racist slurs at Richardson during the volleyball match and was subsequently banned for it. Richardson had claimed in her tweet that she was \u201ctargeted and racially heckled throughout the entirety of the match\u201d but the media parroted Pamplin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/culture\/2022\/09\/rachel-richardson-duke-volleyball-byu-heckler-mormons-race-racism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cevery time she rotated to serve\u201d<\/a> narrative.<\/p>\n<p>Some outlets such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/salt-lake-city\/2022\/08\/30\/byu-diversity-training-duke-volleyball-racism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Axios<\/a> went so far as to hint that BYU\u2019s recent public rejection of the \u201cworld\u2019s diversity, equity, and inclusion\u201d agenda somehow played a role in the incident. <\/p>\n<p>There was no \u201callegedly\u201d or \u201creportedly\u201d in the press\u2019s coverage of the controversy either. Instead, they took Richardson, her family, and Duke at their word. <\/p>\n<p>Because of this, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/sports\/2022\/08\/30\/fan-who-was-banned-by-byu-does\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voicemail threats<\/a> and pressure for \u201cfailing to do something\u201d to combat racism mounted against BYU. Even South Carolina women\u2019s basketball coach Dawn Staley decided to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/byuwbb\/status\/1565870806453719040?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cancel<\/a> her team\u2019s upcoming games against BYU.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"939\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-06-at-2.37.07-PM-939x1024-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-278839\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-06-at-2.37.07-PM-939x1024-1.png 939w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-06-at-2.37.07-PM-275x300-1.png 275w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-06-at-2.37.07-PM-768x837-1.png 768w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-06-at-2.37.07-PM.png 1152w\"><\/figure>\n<p>That pressure is why BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe gave a written and verbal thrashing to all of the fans at the next Cougar volleyball match to address the \u201cegregious and hurtful slurs\u201d launched against Richardson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCougar Nation, we\u2019ve got be better, and we\u2019ve got to have the courage to take care of each other and our guests at our BYU sporting events,\u201d Holmoe tweeted after addressing fans in person.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"945\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-06-at-3.14.39-PM-945x1024-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-278841\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-06-at-3.14.39-PM-945x1024-1.png 945w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-06-at-3.14.39-PM-277x300-1.png 277w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-06-at-3.14.39-PM-768x832-1.png 768w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-06-at-3.14.39-PM.png 1192w\"><\/figure>\n<p>Before long, everyone in Utah including Gov. This is not sports. #striveforgreatness #morethanavollyballplayer,\u201d the leftist NBA star <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KingJames\/status\/1563663546524876801?s=20&amp;t=eue6k82np0Qk7CmhsI-_vg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweeted<\/a> with a handful of emojis. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Timeout<\/h2>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until days later \u2014 when a conservative student newspaper on campus published an exclusive noting that people sitting in the student section where the reported racist incident occurred heard no racial slurs or taunting \u2014 that anyone thought to second guess the story that was fed into the news cycle for days.<\/p>\n<p>Not only did The Cougar Chronicle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.byucougarchronicle.org\/post\/exclusive-racist-comments-at-byu-volleyball-game-never-happened-sources-suggest\">report<\/a> that it was \u201cunable to find a source in the student section that can corroborate Richardson\u2019s claim of racial slurs being yelled at her,\u201d but it also quoted a verified source in the BYU athletic department who said Richardson\u2019s insistence that BYU did nothing to address her concerns during the game were bogus. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Richardson complained of hearing a racial slur during the second set but did not point anyone out. Officials discussed briefly and stationed policemen there. \u2026 [T]here were no more complaints until after the match,\u201d the anonymous source explained. <\/p>\n<p>The source also claimed that \u201cBYU banned an innocent man to appease the mob and make their PR mess go away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile I don\u2019t know if Ms. Richardson genuinely misheard something or intentionally made up this story, it certainly does not constitute the criticism BYU has gotten. There is zero evidence of a slur being said. Not a single witness, besides Ms. Richardson, has come forth. Not a single cell phone video or BYUtv\u2019s several camera angles caught a single thing. How unlikely when this person supposedly said a slur during \u2018every single serve.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That same day, the Salt Lake City Tribune reported that an investigation by the BYU campus police yielded nothing <em>but<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/sports\/2022\/08\/30\/fan-who-was-banned-by-byu-does\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strong video evidence<\/a> that the fan named by the Duke sideline for heckling black players such as Richardson was <em>not<\/em> \u201cshouting anything while the Duke player was serving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a matter of fact, the police officer who reviewed footage featuring the banned fan said, \u201cThere was nothing seen on the game film that led me to believe\u201d that the man \u201cwas the person who was making comments to the player who complained about being called the N-word\u201d and that the non-BYU student wasn\u2019t even present during some of Richardson\u2019s serves. <\/p>\n<p>As the Salt Lake City Tribune reported, the BYU \u201cathletic department wanted to ban the man\u201d anyway. This caving was likely a move to get Duke, Richardson, her family, and the press off of their backs. <\/p>\n<p>Of course, the media outlets who smeared this fan as a racist have yet to retract or apologize for their false claims about BYU and its fans. Some outlets are still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-sports\/story\/_\/id\/34488855\/duke-volleyball-player-rachel-richardson-praises-byu-ad-actions-racial-slur-incident-involving-cougars-fan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hosting segments<\/a> featuring Richardson, her family members, and her account of the controversy.  <\/p>\n<p>The real question here is not whether Richardson was telling the truth but why it took so long for anyone to investigate or corroborate her claims before blasting them to the world. <\/p>\n<p>Any of the corporate media outlets that took time to report this story could have easily tried to verify Richardson\u2019s claims. They have the resources, the time, and the staff to do that legwork \u2014 such as asking the campus police about the results of the investigation or asking fans in the record-setting crowd if they heard anything inappropriate. <\/p>\n<p>But once again, the media failed to do the most basic aspects of their job because, to them, pushing an agenda is more important than finding and reporting facts. <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and co-producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
