The governor also signed an executive order to give California wider ability to get energy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is we are living in an era of extremes,\u201d Newsom said, per <a href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/news\/local-news\/tuesday-temperatures-to-push-californias-power-grid-to-the-limit-newsom-issues-executive-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KTLA<\/a>. \u201cWe are anticipating this extreme heat to be a length and duration of which we haven\u2019t experienced in some time. On the supply side we\u2019re challenged by these extremes and on the demand side, not surprisingly, people are turning up the (air conditioning).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a Tuesday message on Twitter, Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GavinNewsom\">said<\/a>, \u201cthe risk for outages is real and it\u2019s immediate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">CA is experiencing an unprecedented heatwave. This will be the hottest &#038; longest on record for September.<\/p>\n<p>Our energy grid is being pushed to its max. For the past two evenings, electricity loads have come in about 1,000 megawatts below our expectations or approximately two percent below forecast,\u201d Mainzer noted Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The ISO noted that it would tell utility companies to begin initiating rolling outages if the need for energy overtaxes the state\u2019s resources. In August of 2020, California experienced rolling power outages, which was the last time the ISO told utility companies to cut power. The demand lasted for two days and outages impacted around 800,000 homes and businesses. The power went out from 15 minutes to over two hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe never want to get to that point, of course,\u201d Mainzer said, \u201cbut we want everyone to be prepared and understand what is at stake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As of Tuesday afternoon, the current energy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caiso.com\/TodaysOutlook\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">capacity<\/a> was at 58,419 megawatts, with a projected peak of 52,285 megawatts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The state has struggled to keep up with energy demand in recent years as it quickly shifted to renewable sources of energy. The legislature recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/california-passes-54-billion-in-climate-spending-votes-to-keep-nuclear-plant-open-but-infringes-on-oil-and-gas-wells\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voted<\/a> to keep the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant open past its expected closure dates, likely in an attempt to provide the much-needed power to the state as it grapples with high temperatures.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>California energy prices hit their highest levels since the summer of 2020 on Tuesday.
