Electric car owners now might not be able to drive the high-priced vehicles Democrats demanded they buy. <\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, state officials <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/california-941c5a94c7bc7b1f93e1ed4bf6560fd4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> California faces its greatest threat of blackouts this year, with power demand likely to eclipse 51,000 megawatts setting a new high.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs people crank up their air conditioners, the state forecasted record levels of energy use, said Elliot Mainzer, president of California Independent System Operators, which runs the state\u2019s electrical grid,\u201d the Associated Press reported. \u201cThe state has additional energy capacity at the moment \u2018but blackouts, rolling, rotating outages are a possibility,\u2019 Mainzer said, calling additional conservation \u2018absolutely essential.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About 52 million people across the western U.S. were placed under a heat advisory Tuesday morning, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/09\/06\/california-excessive-heat-warning-blackouts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to Axios. Temperatures are expected to reach 125 degrees Fahrenheit in Death Valley and 115 degrees in the California capital of Sacramento.<\/p>\n<p>The warnings Tuesday come after residents <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caiso.com\/Documents\/excessive-heat-starting-tomorrow-will-stress-energy-grid.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survived the continual heat wave over the holiday weekend<\/a> when utility providers <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShellenbergerMD\/status\/1565026009497227264?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1565026009497227264%7Ctwgr%5E2ef797c80efc98c5466629a7f1ae6da572ccc13a%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fthefederalist.com%2Fwp-admin%2Fpost.php%3Fpost%3D278597action%3Dedit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pled<\/a> with electric car owners to refrain from charging their battery-powered vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe top three conservation actions are to set thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, avoid using large appliances and charging electric vehicles, and turn off unnecessary lights,\u201d read an Aug. 30 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caiso.com\/Documents\/excessive-heat-starting-tomorrow-will-stress-energy-grid.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heat bulletin<\/a> from the California Independent System Operator, also known as Caiso.<\/p>\n<p>State officials, including Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom, have urged residents to conserve power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornians should set their thermostat to 78 degrees or higher, avoid using major appliances and turn off unnecessary lights, unless it is unsafe for them to do so,\u201d a Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2022\/08\/31\/as-heat-wave-grips-western-u-s-governor-newsom-takes-action-to-increase-energy-supplies-and-reduce-demand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a> read last week, careful to strip the state utility company\u2019s language on electric vehicles out of the same recommendations from one day prior.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom omitted the line on electric vehicles offered by state utility regulators last week for good reason. Just one week before the state\u2019s latest heat wave put stress on an aging system increasingly dependent on unreliable renewables, the California Air Resources Board issued new regulations to ban gasoline-powered car sales by 2035. The announcement came with a celebration from Newsom, who called the restrictions \u201cone of the most significant steps to the elimination of the tailpipe as we know it,\u201d in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/24\/climate\/california-gas-cars-emissions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview<\/a> with the New York Times. <\/p>\n<p>California\u2019s power grid, however, already unable to withstand pre-existing conditions at times of high demand, is unprepared to power millions more electric vehicles on the road. The state will require 17 more gigawatts of added electricity to keep residents able to charge their electric cars, which, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/eight-straight-new-vehicle-prices-mark-another-record-high-in-november-2021-according-to-kelley-blue-book-301442015.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to Kelly Blue Book in December, come at an average cost of more than $56,000 per vehicle. The nuclear power plant at Diablo Canyon, which is the state\u2019s largest single source of electricity, only produces 2.3 gigawatts. Last week, the state legislature <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/09\/01\/amid-a-self-inflicted-energy-crisis-california-gives-its-last-nuclear-power-plant-a-five-year-extension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approved<\/a> a five-year extension for the plant to continue operating until 2030. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, when people are denied air conditioning during extreme heat, the consequences can be fatal. Nearly 3,900 deaths were recorded from heat exposure between 2010 and 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/projects\/california-extreme-heat-deaths-show-climate-change-risks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to the Los Angeles Times. <\/p>\n<p>Despite the routine threats of blackouts faced by the nearly 40 million people in California, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm held up the state as a model for the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornia is in the lead, can show the rest of the nation how it is done,\u201d Granholm told a local Fox affiliate in an interview <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JUf2yJhHsJg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published<\/a> Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust like Joe Biden, California\u2019s leaders are unplugged from reality,\u201d Larry Behrens, the communications director for the energy non-profit Power the Future, told The Federalist. \u201cApparently, forcing struggling families to buy expensive electric vehicles and then telling them when they can charge them is the green utopia Gavin Newsom really wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration, meanwhile, remains focused on shutting down the American oil and gas industry <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/25\/biden-shops-for-critical-minerals-in-canada-while-shutting-down-mining-projects-on-american-soil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">without<\/a> the expansion of domestic mining operations to harvest the raw materials needed for electric car production. New oil and gas leases, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/federal-oil-leases-slow-to-a-trickle-under-biden-11662230816\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to the Wall Street Journal, have nearly come to a halt. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/federal-oil-leases-slow-to-a-trickle-under-biden-11662230816\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhen Energy Secretary Granholm says California \u2018can show the rest of the nation how it\u2019s done,\u2019 every family should be worried because we see California\u2019s failures and want to do the exact opposite,\u201d Behrens said.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist.
