Natural gas prices in much of Europe have increased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/back-to-the-dark-ages-tucker-carlson-details-europes-self-induced-energy-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than tenfold<\/a> compared to normal levels, prompting various nations to encourage lower usage among households and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe answer is up to us,\u201d Macron <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/europe\/20220905-macron-urges-french-to-save-energy-says-ready-to-send-gas-to-germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> reporters after a conference call with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. He urged residents of France to use air conditioning and heating a \u201cbit less than usual\u201d to avoid power outages \u2014 such as by keeping indoor temperatures no more than 19 degrees Celsius, roughly 66 degrees Fahrenheit, through the winter. Meanwhile, the French government is preparing energy rationing initiatives that could be implemented \u201cas a last resort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The legislature of Spain has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theolivepress.es\/spain-news\/2022\/08\/26\/spains-parliament-green-lights-energy-saving-measures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mandated<\/a> that public air conditioning be set no lower than 27 degrees Celsius, roughly 80.6 degrees Fahrenheit, through the summer months.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, finance ministers of the G7 nations \u2014 which include France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/g7-finance-ministers-commit-to-russian-oil-price-cap-will-help-ukraine-for-as-long-as-it-takes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reaffirmed<\/a> a plan to impose a price cap on Russian oil. The move is meant to \u201csignificantly reduce Russia\u2019s main source of funding for its illegal war,\u201d Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy0936\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian government has since threatened to retaliate over the price cap, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/kremlin-europe-is-blame-nord-stream-1-shutdown-2022-09-05\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirming<\/a> to reporters that the nation may resume gas shipments via Nord Stream 1 if sanctions are eased.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProblems with gas supply arose because of the sanctions imposed on our country by Western states, including Germany and Britain,\u201d Peskov said. \u201cWe see incessant attempts to shift responsibility and blame onto us. We categorically reject this and insist that the collective West \u2014 in this case, the European Union, Canada, and the United Kingdom \u2014 is to blame for the fact that the situation has reached the point where it is now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Klaus-Dieter Maubach, the CEO of German energy company Uniper, told CNBC in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/09\/06\/uniper-says-worst-is-still-to-come-as-russia-halts-gas-flows-to-europe.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> that natural gas prices could continue to soar without collective action. \u201cWhat we see on the wholesale market is 20 times the price that we have seen two years ago,\u201d he remarked. \u201cThat is why I think we need to have really an open discussion with everyone taking responsibility on how to fix that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maubach, whose firm is slated to be acquired by the German government in a $15 billion rescue deal, said he regrets defending Russian state energy conglomerate Gazprom as a reliable gas provider. \u201cThat, in hindsight, maybe it was even a mistake to think that gas would not be used. Maybe it was just wishful thinking,\u201d he commented. \u201cI think this partnership is broken and I don\u2019t think that we can reestablish that in the next weeks, months and years to come. So, we are focusing on replacing Russian gas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Germany \u2014 the largest economy in Europe \u2014 imported roughly 55% of its natural gas from Russia before the invasion of Ukraine and has since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/germany-poised-to-shut-down-last-nuclear-plants-despite-gas-shortage-ahead-of-winter-months\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduced its dependence<\/a> to 35%.
