This vaccine injury adds to evidence that COVID-19 vaccines may promote the development of autoimmune diseases, or worsen existing cases.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/acute-kidney-failure-pfizer-covid-vaccine\/\">This article was originally published by The Defender<\/a> \u2013 Children\u2019s Health Defense\u2019s News &#038; Views Website<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A woman developed a rare case of acute kidney renal failure linked to antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vasculitis.org.uk\/about-vasculitis\/what-is-anca\">AAV)<\/a>\u00a0a few days after receiving her first dose of Pfizer-BioNTech\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender_category\/covid\/\">COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rarediseases.info.nih.gov\/diseases\/13011\/anca-associated-vasculitis\">National Institutes of Health<\/a>, AAV is a group of diseases characterized by the destruction and inflammation of small vessels. The condition occurs when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/323982\">neutrophils<\/a>\u00a0attack small and medium vessels of the body, which can affect several organs, such as the kidney, stomach, intestine and lungs.<\/p>\n<p>According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.karger.com\/Article\/Pdf\/525562\">case study<\/a>\u00a0published July 18 in Nephron, a previously healthy 47-year-old woman presented to a primary care clinic for bilateral flank pain, generalized weakness and bilateral lower extremity swelling that started three days after her first Pfizer shot.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the U.S. and Lebanon said the woman\u2019s vital signs and other parameters\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ancavasculitisnews.com\/news\/pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine-aav-kidney-damage-rare-case\/\">were normal<\/a>\u00a0and she had no shortness of breath or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2005\/1001\/p1253.html#:~:text=Hemoptysis%20is%20defined%20as%20the,uniform%20definitions%20for%20these%20categories.\">hemoptysis<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 \u201cthe spitting of blood derived from the lungs or bronchial tubes as a result of pulmonary or bronchial hemorrhage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lab analyses\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ancavasculitisnews.com\/news\/pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine-aav-kidney-damage-rare-case\/\">showed<\/a>\u00a0the presence of proteins, blood and immune cells in her urine, high levels of creatinine and urea in the blood and a low estimated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/lab-tests\/glomerular-filtration-rate-gfr-test\/#:~:text=A%20glomerular%20filtration%20rate%20(GFR)%20is%20a%20blood%20test%20that,through%20these%20filters%20each%20minute.\">glomerular filtration rate<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 a blood test that \u201cchecks how well your kidneys are working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A complete blood cell count\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ancavasculitisnews.com\/news\/pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine-aav-kidney-damage-rare-case\/\">revealed<\/a>\u00a0higher-than-normal numbers of white blood cells, 82.8% of which were neutrophils, and high levels of C-reactive protein \u2014 an indicator of generalized inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>A blood test came back positive for abnormally high levels of ANCAs against\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6024665\/\">myeloperoxidase<\/a>, one of their two most common targets,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ancavasculitisnews.com\/news\/pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine-aav-kidney-damage-rare-case\/\">ANCA Vasculitis News reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other blood analyses were unremarkable and there were no signs of lung damage.<\/p>\n<p>A kidney biopsy showed scarring and shrinkage of the urine draining tubes, further supporting the belief the woman was experiencing ANCA-related kidney damage.<\/p>\n<p>The presence of scarred kidney tissue \u201cmight point to a chronic process,\u201d the researchers wrote, adding that \u201cAAV\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.karger.com\/Article\/Pdf\/525562\">might have been silent<\/a>\u00a0in our patient and exacerbated after COVID-19 vaccination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Corticosteroids along with azathioprine were used to control the condition.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Case Adds to Reports of COVID Shots Promoting Autoimmune Diseases<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This case adds to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8500057\/\">previous reports<\/a>\u00a0suggesting COVID-19 vaccines may, in rare instances, promote the development or worsening of autoimmune diseases, such as AAV, from their silent state, according to Patricia Inacio, Ph.D., who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ancavasculitisnews.com\/news\/pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine-aav-kidney-damage-rare-case\/\">summarized<\/a>\u00a0the report for ANCA Vasculitis News.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers concluded:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRarely, autoimmune processes have been described post-vaccination. AAV is an example of an autoimmune disease that can be induced or flared up from a silent state by COVID-19 vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA high index of suspicion regarding the presence of an autoimmune renal process is needed whenever a recently COVID-19-vaccinated individual presents for acute kidney injury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent consensus statement on COVID-19 vaccination in patients with immune-mediated kidney disease, these rare cases respond to immunosuppression and mainly occur after the second vaccine dose, the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers said despite being rare, vaccines have been \u201clong thought to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.karger.com\/Article\/Pdf\/525562\">induce autoimmune diseases<\/a>, such as swine flu vaccine\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26728772\/\">inducing Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Different types of COVID-19 vaccines have been \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.karger.com\/Article\/Pdf\/525562\">very rarely linked<\/a>\u201d with several autoimmune diseases, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8652505\/\">rheumatoid arthritis<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8328524\/\">lupus nephritis<\/a>, they added.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.karger.com\/Article\/Pdf\/525562\">case study<\/a>, several cases of vasculitis have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8444793\/\">reported<\/a>\u00a0following COVID-19 vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth induction of vasculitis and a flare of a pre-existing vasculitis\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.karger.com\/Article\/Pdf\/525562\">have been described<\/a>\u00a0post-COVID-19 vaccine,\u201d researchers wrote. AAV also has been \u201crarely illustrated to be induced secondary to different types of COVID-19 vaccines, including the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Researchers also described a case series of 29 patients who developed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/5993-glomerular-diseases\">glomerular disease<\/a>\u00a0post-COVID-19 vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>Glomerular disease \u2014 most often\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30274621\/\">associated with AAV<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uptodate.com\/contents\/glomerular-disease-beyond-the-basics#:~:text=of%20this%20page.-,GLOMERULAR%20DISEASE%20OVERVIEW,and%20protein%20in%20the%20bloodstream.\">reduces the kidneys\u2019 ability<\/a>\u00a0to maintain a balance of certain substances in the bloodstream.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers wrote:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly two of these cases had a complete recovery. Out of all 29 cases, six had a crescentic glomerulonephritis. Four out of 10 ANCA-positive glomerulonephritis cases had the disease occurring after the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, none of which had a complete recovery, although the treatment is unclear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe glomerular disease secondary to COVID-19 vaccination was deemed to be rare, although it should be monitored as a potential adverse event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInterestingly, different types of vasculitides, including anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis, were reported in the context of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine,\u201d researchers wrote. \u201cAs a consequence, multiple ongoing clinical trials are currently studying the safety profile of COVID-19 vaccines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vaers.hhs.gov\/\">Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System<\/a>\u00a0(VAERS), since Dec.14, 2020, there have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medalerts.org\/vaersdb\/findfield.php?TABLE=ON&amp;GROUP1=AGE&amp;EVENTS=ON&amp;SYMPTOMS=Anti-neutrophil+cytoplasmic+antibody+positive+vasculitis+%2810050894%29&amp;VAX=COVID19\">83 cases<\/a>\u00a0of AAV reported to VAERS following COVID-19 vaccination. Of the 83 cases reported,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medalerts.org\/vaersdb\/findfield.php?TABLE=ON&amp;GROUP1=AGE&amp;EVENTS=ON&amp;SYMPTOMS=Anti-neutrophil+cytoplasmic+antibody+positive+vasculitis+%2810050894%29&amp;VAX=COVID19&amp;VAXMAN=PFIZER\/BIONTECH\">63 cases<\/a>\u00a0are attributed to Pfizer\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>Although\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/deaths-covid-vaccines-cdc-novavax-vaers\/\">VAERS<\/a>\u00a0can be used as an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vaers.hhs.gov\/faq.html\">early warning system<\/a>\u00a0to identify rare adverse events like AAV, underreporting is one of its main limitations as a passive surveillance system.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vaers.hhs.gov\/data\/dataguide.html\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,<\/a>\u00a0the term \u201cunderreporting\u201d refers to the fact that VAERS receives reports for only a small fraction of actual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/fda-pfizer-document-dump-minor-adverse-events-withdraw-trial\/\">adverse events<\/a>.
