This triggers a major medical emergency as the brain quickly becomes deprived of necessary oxygen and nutrients. While there are many factors which can contribute to your stroke risk, researchers have recently found that one somewhat unexpected factor\u2014your blood type\u2014could make you 16 percent more likely to experience a stroke before the age of 60. Now, a new study published in the Aug. 2022 issue of the journal <em>Neurology <\/em>says the association is strongest when you look at <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/is-there-a-link-between-your-blood-type-and-risk-of-stroke#The-blood-types-that-influence-stroke-risk\" target=\"_blank\">blood type and early strokes<\/a>\u2014those occurring before age 60\u2014in particular.<span aria-hidden=\"true\">ae0fcc31ae342fd3a1346ebb1f342fcb<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That team conducted a meta-analysis of 48 studies on genetics and ischemic stroke. Their subject pool included 17,000 individuals who had previously had a stroke, as well as nearly 600,000 healthy people who had never had a stroke. They then looked to identify genetic variants associated with stroke risk. Ultimately, they were able to establish a link between early stroke and blood type.<\/p>\n<p>However, the scientists behind the study say they still don&#8217;t know why this particular blood type would cause higher risk. &#8220;It likely has something to do with blood-clotting factors like platelets and cells that line the blood vessels as well as other circulating proteins, all of which play a role in the development of blood clots,&#8221; <strong>Steven J. These people are more likely to die from the life-threatening event, and survivors potentially face decades with disability. That&#8217;s because there are many ways to <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/myhealthfinder\/health-conditions\/heart-health\/reduce-your-risk-stroke\" target=\"_blank\">lower your stroke risk significantly<\/a>. These include quitting smoking, exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and managing any underlying health conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease.
