As a regulated utility, we follow the energy policies of the state. Early this morning, the legislature voted to seek to extend operations at Diablo Canyon Power Plant five years beyond its current license period to ensure statewide electric grid reliability as California transitions toward its clean energy future. This legislation has been sent to the governor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\"><\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>As Elex Michaelson for Fox LA reports, the governor of California, Gavin Newson, asked for the nuclear power plant to remain operational and is expected to sign the legislation, which passed in by a significant bipartisan 67-3 vote.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-embed-card\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BREAKING?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BREAKING<\/a> CA Assembly votes to keep the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant online until at least 2030. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an overwhelming &#038; bipartisan 67-3 vote. <\/p>\n<p>It was supposed to go offline in 2025 but <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GavinNewsom?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GavinNewsom<\/a> asked for its life to be extended to help keep CA\u2019s lights on. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nwPTG09Xxl\">pic.twitter.com\/nwPTG09Xxl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elex Michaelson (@Elex_Michaelson) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Elex_Michaelson\/status\/1565244126156558337?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 1, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;We remain focused on continuing to provide reliable, low-cost, carbon-free energy to the people of California, while safely operating one of the top performing plants in the country,&#8221; Hosn added.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>In May, <a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/newsom-reconsiders-plans-to-close-californias-last-nuclear-plant-amid-energy-shortages\">Newsom asked<\/a> the federal government for a $6 billion bailout to rescue the ailing facility in order to extend its life. The plant, which is responsible for around six percent of all power consumed by Californians, is in dire need of renovations such as earthquake-proofing and other environmental upgrades.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>The news of the nuclear power plant&#8217;s life extension comes as California has tried to move to renewable energy before either its infrastructure, technology, or power demands could warrant the move. In May, <a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/industry-experts-warn-of-potential-power-shortages\">company executives who own electrical grids<\/a> began making dire pronouncements about potential mass shortages over plans to replace fossil-fuel and nuclear plants with &#8220;renewable&#8221; sources.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>The California Energy Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/california-energy-authority-tells-residents-to-avoid-charging-their-electric-cars-due-to-heat-wave\">recently issued a report<\/a> predicting widespread power outages in the state of California for the next five years at the minimum. California&#8217;s power grid operator warned Monday that excessive heat this week will &#8220;stress the energy grid&#8221; and called on Californians for &#8220;voluntary conservation&#8221; of energy. As of Thursday Pacific Gas &#038; Electric Company has on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pge.com\/\">top of their website <\/a>a Flex Alert telling consumers to conserve energy between 4 &#8211; 6 pm to help prevent power outages.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>On April 24, 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/california-energy-authority-tells-residents-to-avoid-charging-their-electric-cars-due-to-heat-wave\">the California Energy Commission crowed<\/a> that it was able to generate 95 percent of its total power from renewable sources. However, the grid was not statewide and didn&#8217;t supply power to Los Angeles, the state\u2019s largest city. Further, the power wasn&#8217;t entirely renewable, relied on natural gas, and lasted seconds before its return to the use of fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Additionally, Pacific Gas &#038; Electric Company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/california-energy-authority-tells-residents-to-avoid-charging-their-electric-cars-due-to-heat-wave\">aging power lines<\/a> have caused more than 1,500 California wildfires in the last decade, including the deadliest blaze in the Golden State&#8217;s history. \u00a0Last week, Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom, <a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/california-washington-to-ban-sales-of-gas-powered-cars-by-2035\">announced a ban on the sale of gas-powered cars in the state by 2035<\/a>.
