Danchenko has pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetween January and November 2017, Mr. Danchenko not only answered every question to the best of his ability, even when asked to speculate, but also provided emails and contact information for other potential sources of information in the [Steele] Reports,\u201d Danchenko\u2019s attorneys told the court on Friday. \u201cThe investigation into the Reports was ultimately completed by Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller, III, in or about November 2017 and the Special Counsel\u2019s office closed its entire investigation into possible Trump\/Russia collusion in March 2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz concluded Danchenko undermined <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/after-indictment-of-steele-source-question-remains-whether-durham-will-charge-fbi-agents-or-leaders\">Steele\u2019s unfounded claims of a \u201cwell-developed conspiracy\u201d<\/a> between former President Donald Trump and Russia. Mueller\u2019s 2019 investigation \u201cdid not establish&#8221; any criminal Trump-Russia collusion.<\/p>\n<p>Danchenko\u2019s legal team argued: \u201cApproximately thirty-four individuals were charged by Mueller\u2019s office, including several for providing false statements to investigators. Mr. Danchenko was not among them. To the contrary, not only did investigators and government officials repeatedly represent that Mr. Danchenko had been honest and forthcoming in his interviews, but also resolved discrepancies between his recollection of events and that of others in Mr. Danchenko\u2019s favor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/who-is-igor-danchenko-steele-dossier-source-john-durham\">WHO IS STEELE DOSSIER SOURCE IGOR DANCHENKO?<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Mueller repeatedly refused to discuss the dossier in 2019 after his report was released.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Justice Department has asserted privileges concerning investigative information and decisions, ongoing matters within the Justice Department, and deliberations within our office,\u201d Mueller told Congress, adding, \u201cFor example, I am unable to address questions about the opening of the FBI\u2019s Russia investigation, which occurred months before my appointment, or matters related to the so-called \u2018Steele Dossier.\u2019 These matters are the subject of ongoing review by the Department.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Horowitz\u2019s December 2019 report on FISA abuse <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/doj-inspector-general-unable-to-say-if-bias-tainted-carter-page-fisa-process\">unearthed problems with the Trump-Russia investigation<\/a> that Mueller either did not find or did not make public and concluded the <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump?source=%2Fnews%2Fdoj-inspector-general-criticizes-fbis-entire-chain-of-command-in-carter-page-fisa-process\">FBI\u2019s investigation was filled with serious missteps<\/a><\/u> and had concealed exculpatory information from the FISA court. Horowitz <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump?source=%2Fnews%2Fdoj-inspector-general-finds-17-significant-errors-or-omissions-in-carter-page-fisa-applications\">criticized the bureau for at least 17 \u201csignificant errors and omissions\u201d<\/a><\/u> related to the FISA warrants against <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/judge-dismisses-carter-page-fisa-lawsuit-comey-fbi\">Trump campaign associate Carter Page<\/a> and for the bureau&#8217;s \u201ccentral and essential\u201d reliance on Steele\u2019s dossier.<\/p>\n<p>Horowitz said Danchenko\u2019s January 2017 interview with FBI officials \u201craised doubts about the reliability of Steele&#8217;s descriptions of information.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Durham\u2019s false statements charges, Danchenko anonymously sourced a fabricated claim about Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort to <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/pr-executive-1-identified-as-longtime-clinton-adviser-who-fed-falsehood-to-steele-source\">longtime Hillary Clinton ally Chuck Dolan<\/a>, who spent many years, including 2016, doing work for Russian businesses and the Russian government.<\/p>\n<p>Durham&#8217;s indictment also says the Steele source lied about Sergei Millian, an American citizen born in Belarus who moved to the United States in the early 2000s and founded a trade group called the Russian American Chamber of Commerce in the USA.<\/p>\n<p>The special counsel said Danchenko falsely told the FBI that in late July 2016, he had received a phone call from Millian wherein he claimed Millian told him about a well-developed conspiracy of cooperation between Trump and Russians and further claimed that Millian had agreed to meet with him in New York. Durham said that, in reality, \u201cDanchenko never received such a phone call or such information\u201d from Millian and that Millian never agreed to meet up with him, saying Danchenko had \u201cfabricated\u201d these claims.<\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor nearly a year, from January 2017 through November 2017, Mr. Danchenko sat through numerous voluntary FBI interviews and provided hours of truthful information to the government,\u201d Danchenko\u2019s lawyers argued Friday, adding, \u201cThese equivocal and ambiguous answers were prompted by fundamentally ambiguous questions, are literally true, and are immaterial as a matter of law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FBI supervisory intelligence analyst Brian Auten was among those who interviewed Danchenko in 2017.
