Pregnant Veterans and VA beneficiaries deserve to have access to world-class reproductive care when they need it most.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The new services will be authorized within 30 days of publication of the rule, said a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/opa\/pressrel\/pressrelease.cfm?id=5820\"><span>press release<\/span><\/a><span> from the VA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOnce the rule is published, VA will immediately prepare to provide these services in as many locations as possible,\u201d said the release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The VA has 1,298 health care facilities throughout the United States and many of those are in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spectator.org\/abortion-law-tracker-all-50-states\/\"><span>dozens of states<\/span><\/a><span> that have moved to restrict abortion since the overturning of<em> Roe v. Wade<\/em> in June. <strong>(READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/spectator.org\/abortion-law-tracker-all-50-states\/\">Abortion Law Tracker: Everything You Need to Know About All 50 States<\/a>)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Dr. Shereef Elnahal, the VA\u2019s undersecretary for health, said those states\u2019 abortion restrictions were a cause for \u201calarm\u201d among many VA healthcare providers and veterans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOffering this care will save Veterans\u2019 health and lives, and there is nothing more important than that,\u201d Elnahal said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Determining if the life of the mother is at risk will be determined on a \u201ccase-by-case\u201d basis, said the press release. Abortions in the cases of rape and incest will only require \u201cself-reporting\u201d by the patient.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The VA\u2019s move is unprecedented. It overrides state laws and is in violation of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/102nd-congress\/house-bill\/5193\/text\"><span>Section 106<\/span><\/a><span> of the Veterans Health Care Act of 1992, which bans the VA from providing abortions in ca<\/span><span>ses \u201crelating to a pregnancy that is complicated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Hyde Amendments prohibits the use of federal funds for active military members\u2019 abortions.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe VA isn\u2019t an abortion clinic,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenatorLankford\/status\/1565777073947426822\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma, \u201cFor 30 years, the law has been clear that the VA isn\u2019t permitted to offer abortions.
