The emphasis is on stepped up arms production, including artillery and ammunition, more training of Ukrainian forces in advanced systems and greater assistance in demining efforts in areas that Russian troops have departed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are looking at a longer war\u201d and changes need to be made to meet new challenges and sustain the Ukrainians, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/event\/a-conversation-with-morten-bodskov\/\">he said speaking at an Atlantic Council forum<\/a>. Kyiv has lost about 20 percent of the nation\u2019s land sin<strong>c<\/strong>e 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea and backed separatists in the east.<\/p>\n<p>He added that he saw no cracks in NATO\u2019s and the European Union\u2019s commitment to Ukraine as winter nears and Russia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-zelenskyy-denmark-copenhagen-b332b00726b952eb47bd2677dccd9e79\">export of energy westward has largely been blocked<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Their] fight is our fight and we must be prepared to make sacrifices,\u201d he said.<br \/>\u201cFundamentally, Ukraine belongs to the Ukrainian people.\u201d<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>Bodskove said the first phase in military aid after the initial invasion by Russia was the spontaneous shipment of arms, equipment and funds to Kyiv. The second followed an April meeting at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, chaired by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, which <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2022\/04\/27\/u-s-missiles-sent-to-ukraine-arent-easily-replaced-panel-tells-senate\">prioritized how allies and partners could best assist Ukraine then<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian president gravely miscalculated in believing Ukrainians would not resist a Kremlin invasion, Bodskove said. Putin also did not foresee the unity of the West in applying heavy sanctions on Moscow and shipping badly needed weapons to Kyiv hold back the onslaught. Nor did Putin expect a major restructuring of alliance forces closer to his borders and Sweden and Finland abandoning their neutral status.<\/p>\n<p>He described Putin as a man longing for a new Russian empire where he considers Europe \u201ca buffet to pick and choose\u201d who to bully next.<\/p>\n<p>As to Kyiv eventually joining NATO and the EU,\u00a0Bodskove said the alliance has an open door policy and the union an open arms policy to new members.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark is \u201cgeographically close to Russia in the Baltic and High North,\u201d so he sees Copenhagen\u2019s security focus moving in those directions. Bodskove was especially welcoming of NATO\u2019s invitation to fellow Nordic countries Sweden and Finland to join the alliance and a new dimension to defenses in those two areas. He saw a new closer Nordic defense policy emerging when Stockholm and Helsinki are formally admitted to NATO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDenmark will be at the center of the Baltic\u201d in regional and alliance defense planning, he said. Bodskove noted despite Denmark\u2019s population of 5.87 million, it has dispatched 1,200 soldiers to Estonia and Latvia and F-16 fighters to bolster their defenses while maintaining its commitment to NATO\u2019s mission in Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been there\u201d in the Cold War with its spheres of influence; \u201cwe must not go back\u201d to a time of empire that should have ended with the fall of the Berlin Wall. Bodskove said Russia and China are making those kinds of moves and both pose \u201clong-term systemic challenges to the way of life\u201d of democracies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is no time to be na\u00efve when meeting with Putin,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In his upcoming meeting with Austin, he said \u201cwe are taking cooperation to a new level\u201d with Denmark\u2019s most important ally. \u201cUkraine will be at the top of the agenda,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Other areas likely to be discussed is Copenhagen\u2019s commitment to upping its security spending to 2 percent of its gross domestic product by 2033 and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2022\/09\/01\/russian-invasion-of-ukraine-will-be-longer-war-says-denmarks-defense-minister\">its policy of opting out of E.U. security and defense policy<\/a>.
