Curtis Water Treatment Plant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/water-emergency-in-mississippi-as-pump-shuts-down\">failed earlier this week<\/a> after severe storms caused the Pearl River to flood, prompting low water pressure and a risk of bacterial infection, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/msdh.ms.gov\/msdhsite\/_static\/23,24664,341.html\">press release<\/a> from the Mississippi Department of Health. Federal and state officials \u2014 including President Joe Biden, Governor Tate Reeves (R-MS), and Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba (D-MS) \u2014 have issued emergency declarations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have officially launched seven state-run water distribution sites around the impacted area of this crisis,\u201d Reeves said in a Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tatereeves\/status\/1565738542734708738\">statement<\/a>. \u201cThese sites will be well-stocked, well-staffed, and well-prepared to handle the continued emergency of the coming days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday morning, the city of Jackson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonms.gov\/water-system-update-thursday-morning\/\">announced<\/a> that \u201cover half of the tanks on the surface system have begun filling back up,\u201d providing \u201csome pressure\u201d to many residents. Officials from the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are aiding the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency \u2014 which has <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MSEMA\/status\/1564631762516467716\">warned<\/a> residents to refrain from drinking the tap water \u2014 with repairs as Jackson endures its fifth day without water resources.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson\u2019s water supply has faced multiple interruptions over the past several decades. Earlier this year, the Environmental Protection Agency issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/epa-administrator-regan-announces-bold-actions-protect-communities-following-journey\">notice of noncompliance<\/a> to city leadership for not \u201crepairing and maintaining equipment necessary to reliably produce drinking water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Good \u2014 a member of the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership\u2019s executive committee and the co-owner of three restaurants in the heart of Jackson \u2014 told The Daily Wire that he has filed three insurance claims over the course of 28 years due to business interruptions arising from the city\u2019s water system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m in that world of business, and I see the pains and challenges we have. We\u2019re trying to bring industry to our town,\u201d he remarked. \u201cA failing infrastructure is a very hard thing to sell a new factory or restaurant on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Good attributed inaction on fixing the city\u2019s water system to political turmoil in Jackson, which has seen eight mayors since 1997, as well as an overall decline in the city\u2019s economy, as factors behind the lackluster water system. The population of Jackson declined from roughly 174,000 residents in 2010 to 154,000 residents in 2020, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/fact\/table\/jacksoncitymississippi\/PST040221#PST040221\">data<\/a> from the Census Bureau.<\/p>\n<p>Two of Good\u2019s restaurants were closed for 21 days during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/millions-without-power-in-texas-energy-prices-climb\">winter freeze<\/a> that impacted much of the southern United States in 2021. \u201cHopefully, this will not become that same thing because the state stepped in,\u201d he remarked. \u201cThe scary thing is to think about it being that long again. \u2026 What does that say to the insurance companies?
