The votes all came after she was cited by the state for failing to pay her own taxes, according to a review of legal and legislative records.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2009, New York&#8217;s taxation department filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image001.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">judgment<\/a> against Fleming and her husband, Robert Agoglia, for failure to pay $2,426 in taxes, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/kiosk.suffolkcountyny.gov\/kioskweb\/Default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Suffolk County Clerk&#8217;s Office<\/a>. County records show the couple did not resolve the tax debt until <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/unnamed-2.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">late June<\/a>, more than three months after the judgment was imposed.<\/p>\n<p>Fleming is one of several Democratic candidates for the House who have pushed for tax hikes and tougher tax enforcement while having a history of delinquency, which could prove a liability in the competitive Long Island district she&#8217;s running to flip.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear why Fleming failed to pay her taxes. According to the taxation department, taxpayers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tax.ny.gov\/enforcement\/collections\/tax-warrants.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">given prior warning<\/a> regarding their unpaid debt before a judgment is issued, after which the state is entitled to seize debtors&#8217; property and garnish wages. Fleming&#8217;s campaign did not return a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The year after she faced the tax judgment, Fleming won election to the Southampton town council and soon lent support to measures that hiked the tax burden on her constituents.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, town board meeting minutes show Fleming <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screen-Shot-2022-08-31-at-3.23.46-PM.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved<\/a> the town council&#8217;s budget, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.27east.com\/southampton-press\/southampton-town-board-adopts-2012-budget-with-63-8-tax-levy-1494126\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">levied<\/a> a more than 2 percent increase in residents&#8217; property taxes. The local outlet <em>Southampton Press <\/em>reported that all council members opposed an amendment to the budget introduced by Fleming that would have levied an additional $800,000 in property taxes from the town. Then in 2013, Southampton again raised property taxes with <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screen-Shot-2022-08-31-at-3.40.06-PM.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fleming&#8217;s support<\/a>. In 2015, she was elected to the Suffolk County legislature, where she voted for more tax increases.<\/p>\n<p>County legislature minutes show Fleming in 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-01-at-10.33.08-AM-1.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voted<\/a> to pass a budget that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/long-island\/suffolk-lawmakers-approve-2-9b-budget-g73691\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">levied<\/a> $60 million for the county in increased sales and property taxes. She <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longislandernews.com\/the-long-islander-archives\/legislators-sound-off-on-suffolks-306b-budget#:~:text=The%20Suffolk%20Legislature%20has%20adopted,additional%20%245%20million%20in%20borrowing.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised<\/a> property taxes <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-01-at-10.22.55-AM.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">again<\/a> the next year, by nearly 5 percent in some towns. Republicans on the legislature slammed that budget for raising the county&#8217;s borrowing by millions to meet massive increases in spending.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a sinking ship,&#8221; county legislator Robert Trotta (R.) said of the budget Fleming approved. &#8220;We don&#8217;t have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fleming <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image009.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/long-island\/politics\/steve-bellone-budget-suffolk-legislature-o78956\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-01-at-1.22.30-PM.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/long-island\/politics\/bellone-suffolk-budget-2020-r42215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved<\/a> yet more tax hikes, raising property tax levies by a combined $38.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>In her campaign for New York&#8217;s First Congressional District, Fleming has endorsed President Joe Biden&#8217;s Inflation Reduction Act, which passed this month and will dramatically <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/policy\/dems-poised-to-make-irs-larger-than-pentagon-state-department-fbi-and-border-patrol-combined\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expand<\/a> the Internal Revenue Service&#8217;s auditing capability.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dems get it done!&#8221; Fleming <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bridgetmfleming\/status\/1556420853491015682?s=20&amp;t=m9F7GZe4p5jc_n58wa0fXA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in August after the Senate passed the legislation, which gives the IRS $80 billion to hire as many as 87,000 new employees.<\/p>\n<p>Fleming is not the only Democratic candidate for the House to have faced scrutiny for unpaid taxes. Pennsylvania congressman Matt Cartwright, who voted for Biden&#8217;s bill expanding the IRS, has <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/tax-delinquent-dem-backs-plan-to-hire-army-of-new-irs-agents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accrued<\/a> thousands of dollars in tax penalties and interest for delinquencies since 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Another Pennsylvania Democrat, Chris Deluzio, who has also endorsed the Inflation Reduction Act, was <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/pennsylvania-dem-neglected-to-pay-property-taxes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fined<\/a>\u00a0for tax delinquency\u00a0last year. In Ohio, Democratic candidate Greg Landsman in March <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/tax-hiking-dem-under-fire-for-unpaid-taxes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">faced<\/a> a tax lien from the state after he voted\u00a0at least eight times as a Cincinnati councilman to raise taxes and fees on his constituents.<\/p>\n<p>Fleming will face off in November against Republican Nick LaLota in the highly competitive district, which the <em>Cook Political Report<\/em> rates as &#8220;lean Republican.&#8221; Incumbent Rep. Lee Zeldin (R.) is vacating the seat to run against Gov.
