Peggy Carr, the commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics that was involved in the study, expressed concerns ahead of the report\u2019s release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been much speculation about how shuttered schools and interrupted learning may have affected students\u2019 opportunities to learn,\u201d Carr <a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/whatsnew\/commissioner\/remarks2022\/8_31_2022.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cOur own data reveal the pandemic\u2019s toll on education in other ways, including increases in students seeking mental health services,\u00a0absenteeism,\u00a0school violence and disruption,\u00a0cyberbullying, and nationwide\u00a0teacher and staff shortages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think we can expect to see these 9-year-olds catch up by the time they leave high school,\u201d Dr. Aaron Pallas, professor of Sociology and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/education-departments-first-pandemic-era-trend-data-show-worst-reading-math-declines-in-decades-11662004860?mod=hp_lead_pos10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> the Wall Street Journal about the report. \u201cThis is not something that is going to disappear quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The drop in scores also occurred despite record-level federal spending on education. A total of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/school-districts-are-struggling-to-spend-emergency-covid-19-funds-11652866201?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$122 billion<\/a> was earmarked for K-12 schools as part of the American Rescue Plan alone.<\/p>\n<p>Many states have yet to invest their portion of the federal government\u2019s funding, according to the Wall Street Journal. Those that have are dedicating the funds to teachers, counselors, tutoring, and technology upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/students-are-still-struggling-post-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> in July that pandemic lockdowns and remote learning have led to long-term concerns regarding students, as rates of chronic absenteeism and other serious behavioral issues are rising.<\/p>\n<p>A study by the National Center for Education Statistics <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/more-than-80-percent-of-u-s-public-schools-report-pandemic-has-negatively-impacted-student-behavior-and-socio-emotional-development-1031571283\">found<\/a>\u00a0that 72% of public schools over the past year reported higher rates of chronic absenteeism, defined as a student who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/datastory\/chronicabsenteeism.html#three\">misses<\/a>\u00a0at least 15 school days a year.<\/p>\n<p>A separate study by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/leadership\/how-bad-is-student-absenteeism-right-now-educators-tell-us\/2022\/01\">EdWeek Research Center<\/a>\u00a0found that absenteeism rates were significantly higher in schools that were completely remote during the 2020-21 school year than in schools with in-person learning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scores in math and reading declined at the worst level in decades for students during the pandemic, according to a new assessment.
