As a result, the California Independent System Operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/california-asks-residents-to-avoid-charging-electric-vehicles-due-to-blackout-risk-days-after-unveiling-new-gas-car-ban\">prepared<\/a> to handle elevated electricity demand and warned residents that it would likely issue \u201cvoluntary energy conservation\u201d notices over the Labor Day weekend. The agency\u2019s first \u201cFlex Alert\u201d \u2014 which recommended voluntary decreases in energy consumption from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm \u2014 was released on Wednesday and extended to Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring that time, consumers are urged to conserve power by setting thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, if health permits, avoiding use of major appliances and turning off unnecessary lights,\u201d the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caiso.com\/Documents\/california-iso-extends-flex-alert-to-thursday-sept-1.pdf\">announcement<\/a> said. \u201cThey should also avoid charging electric vehicles while the Flex Alert is in effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The request to refrain from charging electric vehicles occurred days after the California Air Resources Board <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/california-expected-to-ban-sale-of-new-gas-cars\">issued new rules<\/a> requiring 35% of new vehicles to produce zero emissions by 2026 \u2014 a standard that will rise to a 68% benchmark by 2030 and a 100% level by 2035. The legislatures of Massachusetts, Washington, and Virginia have previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/two-more-states-follow-californias-ban-on-new-gas-cars\">passed<\/a> laws binding their states to standards approved by the entity.<\/p>\n<p>Charging an electric vehicle requires twice as much energy as a refrigerator each year, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/vehicles\/articles\/fact-994-september-11-2017-electric-vehicle-charging-consumes-less-energy\">data<\/a> from the Department of Energy. Researchers from Cornell University\u2019s College of Engineering have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ece.cornell.edu\/spotlights\/prepare-grid-now-power-electric-vehicles\">warned<\/a> that a rushed transition to electric vehicles will overwhelm the nation\u2019s grids barring robust upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, most people charge their electric cars when they come home in the evening \u2014 when electricity demand is typically at its peak,\u201d the researchers said. \u201cIf left unmanaged, the power demanded from many electric vehicles charging simultaneously in the evening will amplify existing peak loads, potentially outstripping the grid\u2019s current capacity to meet demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and other top Biden administration officials have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/energy-secretary-lays-out-the-only-way-to-avoid-high-gas-prices-and-its-not-producing-more-oil\">urged<\/a> the rapid adoption of electric vehicles to compensate for high costs at the pump. Gas prices surpassed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/gas-prices\">$5.00 per gallon<\/a> in early June before subsiding to $3.83 per gallon as of Thursday, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">AAA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe real truth is that as long as our nation remains overly reliant on oil and fossil fuels, we will feel these price shocks again,\u201d Granholm said earlier this year. \u201cThis is not going to be the last time.
