Jackson<\/em> and the consequential overturning of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, the corporate media has spewed misinformation about abortion and what a post-<em>Roe<\/em> world means for Americans, creating panic and chaos throughout the country. To combat this, pro-life OB-GYNs have launched a campaign to debunk those lies and voice the truth about abortion and women\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/aaplog.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists<\/a> (AAPLOG) has released \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/aaplog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/AAPLOG-Myth-v-Fact.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Myth vs. Fact: Correcting Misinformation on Maternal Medical Care<\/a>,\u201d which busts pro-abortion myths and provides clarity after <em>Dobbs<\/em>. Here\u2019s what you need to know.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Myth #1: Abortion Is Health Care<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Despite this misinformation being pushed by both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/advocacy\/abortion-is-essential\/come-prepared\/abortion-access-fact-sheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2022\/07\/03\/1109483662\/doctors-werent-considered-in-dobbs-but-now-theyre-on-abortions-legal-front-lines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NPR<\/a>, AAPLOG explains why it\u2019s not true. The ACOG has an extreme view on abortion in comparison to \u201cthe vast majority of OB\/GYNs in the country\u201d and has \u201cactively opposed doctors who do not agree with the group\u2019s radical positions.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>In fact, ACOG does not support giving patients ultrasounds, \u201cwhich are critical for providing informed consent to a patient\u201d prior to abortions. It also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/abortion-advocates-are-resorting-orwellian-language-games-opinion-1689602\">does not favor restrictions<\/a> on partial-birth abortions and rarely asks its members how they view abortion overall.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Myth #2: Abortion Restrictions <\/strong>Interfere with the Doctor-Patient Relationship<\/h2>\n<p>Despite this common pro-abortion talking point, which is perpetuated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/press-center\/press-releases\/ruling-egregious-allowance-government-intrusion-medicine\">American Medical Association<\/a>, the AAPLOG points out that prior to the lethal procedure, there is often no relationship between mothers and abortionists, who \u201ctend to leave the medical care afterwards to other physicians who either have a prior relationship with the patient or who work in her local emergency room.\u201d   <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not an intrusion on the doctor\/patient relationship to protect the lives of BOTH of our patients,\u201d the pro-life group added.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Myth #3: Abortion Is Sometimes Necessary to Save the Mother\u2019s Life<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Despite this narrative rearing its head in the media \u2014 with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/07\/02\/1109557947\/some-abortions-are-necessary-to-save-the-life-of-a-patient\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NPR<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/factcheck-abortion-false-idUSL1N2TC0VD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reuters<\/a>, and other outlets claiming that in order for women to live, they must be allowed to kill their unborn children \u2014 the OB-GYNs explain why this just isn\u2019t true.<\/p>\n<p>While unborn lives are sometimes tragically lost due to life-threatening medical complications, the unintentional death of an unborn baby in the course of saving a mother\u2019s life is not abortion, since abortion is the intentional killing of a child. In fact, as AAPLOG notes, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/article\/2017\/11\/estimating-abortion-provision-and-abortion-referrals-among-united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">93%<\/a> of practicing OB\/GYNs do not perform elective abortions but have always been able to offer life-saving treatment to women and will continue to be able to do so regardless of state laws on abortion\u201d and \u201cOB\/GYNs are trained to discern when they need to intervene to save a mother\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElective abortion is not lifesaving medical care,\u201d AAPLOG said. \u201cOB\/GYNs will still be able to offer lifesaving medical care to pregnant women. No laws on elective abortion will impact that.\u201d  <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Myth #4: Women with Ectopic Pregnancies or Miscarriages Won\u2019t Get Proper Care<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As AAPLOG <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aaplog\/status\/1531717215082487811\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notes<\/a>, elective abortions are completely different from miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies. In the case of a miscarriage, \u201cthe baby has already died and therefore any treatment of a miscarriage would not be an abortion.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>Treating ectopic pregnancy involves removing an embryo that has implanted outside the uterus and thus cannot survive. \u201cThis life-saving treatment is not prevented by any current law restricting or banning abortion,\u201d AAPLOG explains. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Myth #5:<\/strong> <strong>Maternal Mortality Rates Will Increase <\/strong>Post<strong>\u2013<em>Dobbs<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/no-question-us-maternal-mortality-rate-will-rise-post-roe-experts-say-rcna35741\">NBC News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/jun\/27\/roe-v-wade-overturned-maternal-mortality-rate-will-rise\">The Guardian<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/news\/news-releases\/2022\/06\/acog-statement-on-the-decision-in-dobbs-v-jackson\">ACOG<\/a> have all spread this misinformation to elevate their pro-abortion talking points, it becomes clear when examining data that abortion restrictions do not lead to increased maternal mortality. The AAPLOG highlights that the United States has one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajmc.com\/view\/us-ranks-worst-in-maternal-care-mortality-compared-with-10-other-developed-nations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highest maternal mortality rates<\/a> despite having <em>Roe<\/em> in place for almost 50 years.  <\/p>\n<p>As AAPLOG says, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/aaplog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/AAPLOG-Position-Statement-WHPA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">studies<\/a> from a diverse range of countries suggest that abortion is actually associated with higher maternal mortality rates and restrictions may lead to improved maternal health.\u201d  The pro-life group of OB-GYNS also <a href=\"https:\/\/aaplog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/CO-10-State-Level-Restrictions-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cites<\/a> data showing that \u201cabortion is associated with 49.5 maternal deaths per 100,000 women compared to a rate of only 8.1 per 100,000 for all external causes of death after delivery.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Myth #6: Abortion Restrictions Will Hurt Women\u2019s Care<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>To combat this myth that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/05\/24\/texas-abortion-law-pregnancy-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Texas Tribune<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/us-law-week\/biden-warns-womens-health-at-risk-after-courts-roe-ruling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> have peddled, AAPLOG explains that pro-life provisions such as \u201cultrasound requirements, hospital privileges, and waiting periods\u201d actually help keep women safe and ensure they receive the best care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor example, ultrasounds help verify the gestational age, which is critical to accurately assessing the risks associated with an abortion,\u201d AAPLOG explains. \u201cThe further along in the pregnancy a woman is, the greater risk she faces from an abortion. There is no way to provide accurate informed consent for a woman if the gestational age of her pregnancy is not certain.\u201d <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Myth<\/strong> <strong>#7: Abortion Does Not Affect the Mother\u2019s Long-Term Reproductive Health<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>AAPLOG successfully debunks this misinformation spread by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/30\/well\/can-an-abortion-affect-your-fertility.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New York Times<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/ask-experts\/im-about-6-weeks-pregnant-and-i-have-had-an-abortion-before-i-was-just-wondering-will-that-effect-my-pregnancy-if-i-do-decide-to-keep-the-baby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Planned Parenthood<\/a> by pointing out that \u201cthe Institute of Medicine lists surgical abortion as an immutable risk factor for <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/abortion-increases-risk-preterm-birth-evidence-new-publication\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">preterm<\/a> birth.\u201d Additionally, mothers who deliver their babies preterm \u201care at a higher risk of medical complications later in life including cardiovascular disease and stroke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/aaplog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/FINAL-PRACTICE-BULLETIN-5-Abortion-Preterm-Birth.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Women<\/a> face a 35% increased risk of preterm birth in a future pregnancy after one surgical abortion and an almost 90% increase in preterm birth risk after two abortions,\u201d AAPLOG writes.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Myth #8: Chemical Abortions Are Safe for Women<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/12\/16\/health\/abortion-pills-fda.html#:~:text=The%2520federal%2520government%2520on%2520Thursday,from%2520specially%2520certified%2520health%2520providers.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in-person<\/a> visits with doctors are not required to have a chemical abortion, doctors are unable \u201cto determine how far along the pregnancy is or rule out a dangerous ectopic pregnancy.\u201d  Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/ectopic-pregnancy\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20372088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">symptoms<\/a> of chemical abortion are similar to a \u201crupturing ectopic pregnancy.\u201d As AAPLOG notes, \u201cif this causes a delay in diagnosis of even a few hours, it can be catastrophic.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Myth #9: Abortion Restrictions Will <\/strong>Harm Women\u2019s Mental Health<\/h2>\n<p>Despite this myth being pushed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2022\/06\/30\/roe-v-wade-overturn-dire-impact-mental-health\/7744374001\/\">USA Today<\/a>, AAPLOG has pointed to facts illustrating that the opposite is true. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom 1993 to 2018, there were at least <a href=\"https:\/\/aaplog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/CO-10-State-Level-Restrictions-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">75<\/a> studies examining the link between abortion and mental health,\u201d AAPLOG stated. \u201cTwo-thirds of those studies showed a correlation between abortion and adverse mental health outcomes.\u201d Furthermore, the suicide rate for post-abortive mothers is up to seven times higher than those who were still pregnant or had given birth, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/aaplog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/AAPLOG-Position-Statement-WHPA.pdf\">study<\/a> from Finland.    <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Sophia is an intern at The Federalist and a student at Le Moyne College.
