On Aug. 24, a department supervisor had students remove clothes and other debris from a homeless encampment the group said had been &#8220;forcibly evacuated&#8221; by police.<\/p>\n<p>Upon discovering the atrocity, FOCUS pulled students from the site and terminated its partnership with the Department of Parks and Trees. On Wednesday, the program\u2019s student leaders issued a statement of apology, <a href=\"https:\/\/yaledailynews.com\/blog\/2022\/08\/31\/yale-pre-orientation-program-draws-criticism-for-clearing-local-homeless-encampment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">telling<\/a> the <em>Yale Daily News<\/em> they had committed &#8220;violence&#8221; and &#8220;theft&#8221; against the &#8220;unhoused.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This sort of violence\u2014\u2018cleaning up after the cops\u2019 and theft of unhoused people\u2019s homes and belongings\u2014is antithetical to the values of FOCUS,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>Yale\u2019s Dwight Hall Center for Public Service and Social Justice, which runs the orientation program, backed the student leaders\u2019 decision. According to Dwight Hall executive director Peter Crumlish, the group is working to &#8220;understand the impact of the situation and to help students reflect on the experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Liberals in recent years have agitated against clearing homeless encampments in U.S. cities. Democrats in Maryland <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/a-new-dem-bill-would-make-tent-cities-permanent-fixture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supported<\/a> a bill this year to bar police from clearing the encampments.
