Now, officials are asking residents to avoid charging their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/electric-cars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">electric vehicles<\/a> in the interest of not overwhelming the <a href=\"http:\/\/dailywire.com\/topic\/energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">power<\/a> grid.<\/p>\n<p>The western United States is facing a likely \u201cprolonged and record heat wave\u201d that could lead to temperatures as high as 115 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/discussions\/hpcdiscussions.php?disc=pmdspd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Weather Service<\/a>. As a result, the California Independent System Operator is seeking to bring all available resources online to handle higher electricity demand and expects to issue \u201cvoluntary energy conservation\u201d notices over the Labor Day weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe top three conservation actions are to set thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, avoid using large appliances and charging electric vehicles, and turn off unnecessary lights,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicpower.org\/periodical\/article\/california-western-grid-expected-face-strain-with-extreme-heat-higher-demand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Public Power Association<\/a>. During a \u201cFlex Alert,\u201d residents are encouraged to reduce energy consumption from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm \u2014 the hours in which \u201cdemand for electricity remains high and there is less solar energy available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>California also experienced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/california-begs-residents-to-protect-energy-grid-scale-back-charging-electric-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">round of blackouts<\/a> during last year\u2019s Labor Day weekend. The state issued Flex Alerts because grid operators predicted \u201can increase in electricity demand, primarily from air conditioning use\u201d related to extreme temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>The warnings of low grid capacity come days after the California Air Resources Board <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/california-expected-to-ban-sale-of-new-gas-cars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued new rules<\/a> requiring 35% of new vehicles to produce zero emissions by 2026 \u2014 a standard that will rise to a 68% benchmark by 2030 and a 100% level by 2035. Yet experts have warned that the state\u2019s electric grid will require significant upgrades to manage a rapid transition away from internal combustion vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, most people charge their electric cars when they come home in the evening \u2014 when electricity demand is typically at its peak,\u201d according to researchers at Cornell University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ece.cornell.edu\/spotlights\/prepare-grid-now-power-electric-vehicles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">College of Engineering<\/a>. \u201cIf left unmanaged, the power demanded from many electric vehicles charging simultaneously in the evening will amplify existing peak loads, potentially outstripping the grid\u2019s current capacity to meet demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The legislatures of Massachusetts, Washington, and Virginia have previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/two-more-states-follow-californias-ban-on-new-gas-cars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed<\/a> laws conforming their states to standards approved by the California Air Resources Board. However, officials in Virginia have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ridiculous-edict-virginia-gov-glenn-youngkin-blasts-californias-gas-car-phase-out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denounced<\/a> the state\u2019s laws \u2014 greenlit last year when Democrats controlled the General Assembly \u2014 and are seeking to repeal them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn an effort to turn Virginia into California, liberal politicians who previously ran our government sold Virginia out by subjecting Virginia drivers to California vehicle laws,\u201d Governor Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) wrote. \u201cNow, under that pact, Virginians will be forced to adopt the California law that prohibits the sale of gas and diesel-fueled vehicles. I am already at work to prevent this ridiculous edict from being forced on Virginians. California\u2019s out of touch laws have no place in our Commonwealth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On a national level, Democratic officials have been similarly eager to phase out internal combustion vehicles while incentivizing the purchase of electric cars.
