Kathy Hochul (D-NY) is under fire for stretching ethics rules by receiving more than $475,000 in campaign donations from state officials who were appointed by her disgraced predecessor, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.<\/p>\n<p>A longstanding New York executive order that Hochul reissued on her first day in office prohibits campaign donations from state officials the governor appointed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Despite this rule, Hochul took more than $475,000 in campaign donations from at least 40 political appointees or their family members who serve on government boards and agencies.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Battery Park City Authority board member Don Capoccia\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/30\/nyregion\/kathy-hochul-donors-money-ethics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">donated<\/a>\u00a0over $56,000 to Hochul\u2019s campaign in the months leading up to the Democrat gubernatorial primary in June.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Hochul received more than $90,000 from Joe Belluck, a trial lawyer who Cuomo appointed to serve on two statewide panels, and Belluck\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>However, Hochul\u2019s team argued the longstanding executive order does not apply to her because these donations came from state officials who Cuomo appointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been clear from the beginning of Governor\u2019s Hochul\u2019s term that people who are appointed by her are prevented from donating once they are appointed. We have followed that straightforward standard consistently and strictly,\u201d Hochul campaign spokesman Jerrel Harvey\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/08\/30\/gov-hochul-raising-campaign-cash-from-andrew-cuomo-appointees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Julie Wood, a spokeswoman for the governor\u2019s office,\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/30\/nyregion\/kathy-hochul-donors-money-ethics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a>\u00a0Hochul has applied the ethics rule more \u201cbroadly and strictly\u201d than her predecessor and claimed Cuomo\u2019s team \u201cviolated their own rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernor Hochul holds herself to a higher ethical standard,\u201d Wood told the <em>New York Times.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despite Hochul\u2019s argument, she later appointed Belluck to New York\u2019s new Cannabis Advisory Board in June.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Republican nominee for governor Rep. Lee Zeldin blasted Hochul for taking donations from political appointees and their relatives and\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/leezeldin\/status\/1564759766383075332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pledged<\/a>\u00a0to enact a \u201cstronger\u201d executive order to enforce the ethics rules on campaign contributions from statewide officials appointed by the governor.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Another day, yet another Kathy Hochul corruption scandal involving her campaign donations.<\/p>\n<p>Now we learn she took in $400k in donations from political appointees and spouses despite an Executive Order in place that seeks to prevent much of this. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tFcfz2ji9W\">https:\/\/t.co\/tFcfz2ji9W<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/a6dWq4yTAQ\">pic.twitter.com\/a6dWq4yTAQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Lee Zeldin (@leezeldin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/leezeldin\/status\/1564759766383075332?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 30, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Zeldin\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/leezeldin\/status\/1564759766383075332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Kathy Hochul\u2019s name becomes more and more synonymous with corruption each passing day. When she took over for disgraced Governor Andrew Cuomo, she claimed she would change the culture in Albany. She lied, unless she was actually promising us she would make the culture in Albany even more toxic.<\/p>\n<p>Each week, we are learning about new Hochul scandals, whether it\u2019s giving massive no-bid state contracts to her donors, abusing state aircraft to fly around New York, or this latest scandal and countless others. Even during her time as Cuomo\u2019s Lieutenant Governor, she was always silent, complicit or out to lunch scandal after scandal.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAs Governor, I will sign an enhanced Executive Order stronger than the current EO, expanding the prohibited donor list to include spouses, and will call on the New York State Legislature to codify this into law,\u201d Zeldin concluded. \u201cWe cannot allow this culture of corruption to continue in Albany.
