(AP Photo\/Susan Walsh)<\/p>\n<p>Susan Walsh\/AP<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>\n<br \/>\u201cIn the past, when the Department has further limited attendance at partisan political events during Presidential election years, it has allowed an exception for non-career appointees who had close family members who were running for partisan offices, or similar situations,&#8221; he added. &#8220;The new policy permits no exceptions.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Garland also noted that prior DOJ policy \u201callowed non-career employees to passively attend campaign events and other partisan political events in their personal capacities on the evening of Election Day.\u201d He said now \u201cnon-career appointees may not attend partisan political events, even on the evening of Election Day.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/fbi-agents-controversial-hunter-biden-briefing-ordered-talk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FBI OFFICIALS BEHIND CONTROVERSIAL HUNTER BIDEN 2020 BRIEFING ORDERED TO TALK<\/a><br \/>\n<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>The timing of Garland&#8217;s directive is notable, especially following<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/trump-quest-special-master-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scrutiny of the FBI&#8217;s raid of Mar-a-Lago.<\/a><br \/>\n Former President<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a><br \/>\n and his allies have accused the agency and officials of bias following<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/doj-attorney-client-privileged-information-maralago\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the FBI\u2019s unprecedented raid of his Florida resort home<\/a><br \/>\n.\n<\/p>\n<p>Republicans have said they believe <u><br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/hunter-biden-double-standard-trump-raid-gop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a double standard has been on display<\/a><br \/>\n<\/u> with the DOJ\u2019s handling of its investigation into Hunter Biden and its inquiry into former Secretary of State<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/grassley-clinton-kid-gloves-treatment-never-raided-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hillary Clinton\u2019s mishandling of classified information on a private email server<\/a><br \/>\n when compared to the FBI\u2019s raid of Mar-a-Lago.\n<\/p>\n<p>Garland on Tuesday pointed to a DOJ-wide<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/jmd\/file\/834496\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memo<\/a><br \/>\n issued by acting Assistant Attorney General for Administration Jolene Lauria on Tuesday.\n<\/p>\n<p>Lauria noted Tuesday that certain DOJ employees, such as members of the FBI and those in the DOJ\u2019s criminal and national security divisions, were already \u201cfurther restricted\u201d in their political activities, saying that previous attorneys general determined that \u201call political appointees will be subject to the rules that govern \u2018further restricted\u2019 employees under the Hatch Act to ensure there is not an appearance that politics plays any part in the Department\u2019s day-to-day operations.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><br \/>\n<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>Lauria also stressed that political appointees at the DOJ may not \u201cengage in partisan political activity\u201d or \u201cuse their official authority or influence to interfere with or affect the result of an election.\u201d She said DOJ officials \u201cmust be vigilant to prevent the appearance that any of our official duties are an effort to influence the outcome of an election.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Department employees, we have been entrusted with the authority and responsibility to enforce the laws of the United States in a neutral and impartial manner,\u201d Garland said Tuesday. \u201cIn fulfilling this responsibility, we must do all we can to maintain public trust and ensure that politics \u2014 both in fact and appearance \u2014 does not compromise or affect the integrity of our work.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Attorney General Merrick Garland has announced new bans on political involvement from Justice Department officials in the wake of widespread accusations of bias being directed toward the agency.
