A <a href=\"https:\/\/vault.fbi.gov\/the-monkees\">redacted version of documents<\/a>\u00a0on the group was posted by the bureau in 2011,\u00a0titled \u201cAdditional Activities Denouncing the U.S. Policy in the War in Vietnam.\u201d Unredacted portions include comments by an informant who said\u00a0\u201csubliminal messages\u201d were shown on a screen behind the band during a 1967 concert that \u201cconstituted \u2018left wing innovations of a political nature,\u2019\u201d including messages and images related to the Vietnam War.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-431038\" class=\"wp-image-431038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/GettyImages-1324471638-865x576.jpg\" alt=\"Micky Dolenz of The Monkees poses backstage at The Cutting Room on June 19, 2021 in New York City. (Gary Gershoff\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Another file is completely redacted,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/08\/30\/the-monkees-micky-dolenz-sues-doj-to-get-secret-fbi-files\/\">according to the New York Post.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dolenz filed a Freedom of Information Act request in June but sued after getting no response,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/micky-dolenz-monkees-sues-fbi-1235133063\/\">according to Billboard.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dolenz got the idea to pursue the possibility the FBI kept files on the band when attorney Mark Zaid, who represents him in the lawsuit, suggested they research it,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-monkees-micky-dolenz-fbi-1234584299\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:the lawyer told Rolling Stone.\" data-rapid_p=\"12\" data-v9y=\"1\">the lawyer told Rolling Stone.<\/a> It has long been known that the FBI kept files on John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and others.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI \u201cwas actively monitoring war dissenters, perceived radicals and anyone counter to [former bureau director]\u00a0J. Edgar Hoover\u2019s cultural beliefs, and that included the Monkees,\u201d Zaid said.<\/p>\n<p>The redacted documents the bureau released in 2011 \u201cjust kind of reinforced for me that there was actually something here,\u201d Zaid said. \u201cWe\u2019re still fishing, but we know there\u2019s fish in the water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheoretically, anything could be in those files. \u2026 It could be almost nothing. But we\u2019ll see soon enough,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI has not responded to numerous media inquiries about the documents.<\/p>\n<p>The band was formed in 1966 and was the brainchild of Hollywood television producers who wanted to launch a sitcom featuring a pop group. Chosen for their on-camera charisma more than their musical abilities, the band members didn\u2019t write many of their songs and session musicians typically played on their records. But with hits such as \u201cLast Train to Clarksville,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m a Believer,\u201d \u201cPleasant Valley Sunday,\u201d and \u201cDaydream Believer,\u201d they sold over 75 million albums before breaking up in 1970.<\/p>\n<p>Jones died in 2012, Tork in 2019 and Nesmith last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The last living member of beloved 1960s band the Monkees is suing the FBI for the bureau\u2019s secret files on the made-for-TV pop group.
