The office of Attorney General Jason Miyares (R-VA) confirmed to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/3619975-virginia-ag-says-state-bound-by-california-rule-phasing-out-new-gas-powered-cars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hill<\/a> on Monday that Virginia is required to follow the guidelines under the terms of a state law passed in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Attorney General is hopeful that the General Assembly repeals this law and discontinues any trend that makes Virginia more like California,\u201d Miyares spokeswoman Victoria LaCivita told the outlet in a statement. \u201cUnelected California bureaucrats should not be dictating the will of Virginians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Republicans took control of the Virginia House of Delegates and elected Governor Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) last year, the Democratic Party still controls the Virginia Senate by a single vote. However, state Sen. Joe Morrissey (D-VA) has been known to break ranks with his colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>Youngkin opposes the legislation and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ridiculous-edict-virginia-gov-glenn-youngkin-blasts-californias-gas-car-phase-out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expressed<\/a> support for repealing the law \u2014 an outcome that would be most probable if Republicans gain control of the Virginia Senate in this year\u2019s elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn an effort to turn Virginia into California, liberal politicians who previously ran our government sold Virginia out by subjecting Virginia drivers to California vehicle laws,\u201d Youngkin wrote. \u201cNow, under that pact, Virginians will be forced to adopt the California law that prohibits the sale of gas and diesel-fueled vehicles. I am already at work to prevent this ridiculous edict from being forced on Virginians. California\u2019s out of touch laws have no place in our Commonwealth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Washington and Massachusetts have likewise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/two-more-states-follow-californias-ban-on-new-gas-cars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enacted<\/a> legislation conforming the states to standards passed by the California Air Resources Board. \u201cThis is a critical milestone in our climate fight,\u201d Gov. Jay Inslee (D-WA) said on social media while expressing support for the new regulations.<\/p>\n<p>On a national level, Democratic officials have been similarly eager to phase out internal combustion vehicles while incentivizing the purchase of electric cars. The Inflation Reduction Act, which President Joe Biden signed earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bidens-inflation-bill-made-7500-electric-vehicle-tax-credits-ford-and-gm-just-raised-their-prices-by-the-same-amount\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">greenlit<\/a> $7,500 tax credits for the purchase of new electric vehicles \u2014 even as Ford and GM raised their electric vehicle prices by approximately the same amount.<\/p>\n<p>Biden administration officials have argued that the electric vehicle tax credits \u2014 combined with elevated prices at the pump \u2014 will accelerate renewable energy adoption in the United States. Gas prices surpassed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/gas-prices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$5.00 per gallon<\/a> in early June before subsiding to $3.84 per gallon as of Tuesday, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AAA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more pain we are all experiencing from the high price of gas, the more benefit there is for those who can access electric vehicles,\u201d Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/pete-buttigieg-tells-americans-how-they-can-channel-their-pain-at-the-pump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a> before House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee members last month.<\/p>\n<p>However, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/civilization-will-crumble-elon-musk-issues-dire-warning-about-rapid-shift-to-green-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cautioned<\/a> during a Monday energy summit in Norway that the global economy is not equipped for a rapid transition toward renewable energy. \u201cRealistically I think we need to use oil and gas in the short term, because otherwise civilization will crumble,\u201d Musk told reporters. \u201cOne of the biggest challenges the world has ever faced is the transition to sustainable energy and to a sustainable economy.
