In a <a href=\"https:\/\/mnfreedomfund.org\/updates\/2022\/8\/25\/statement-in-response-to-kstps-reporting-on-shawn-tillman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a> released last week, MFF Co-Executive Directors Mirella Ceja-Orozco and Elizer Darris explained that they were happy to subsidize Tillman\u2019s return to the streets since his bail was cheaper than most of their requests and since they believe \u201cwealth should not decide the difference between pre-trial detention and pre-trial release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn all our bail decisions, we strive to balance pre-trial justice with community safety. As a community, we are struggling to navigate and solve violence in our neighborhoods,\u201d the duo wrote. \u201cWe all want and deserve to be safe. But it is neither just nor effective to respond to violence by denying bail and pre-emptively punishing people who are disproportionately poor, Black, brown, and Indigenous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MFF has a history of paying for the release of dangerous criminals. In 2020, MFF <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/09\/17\/kamala-harris-promoted-fund-that-bailed-out-man-accused-of-raping-a-child\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shelled out $75,000<\/a> so a 36-year-old registered sex offender, who faced up to 30 years in prison for allegedly raping an 8-year-old girl, could walk the streets again. Before that, MFF bailed out a man who faced 20 years in prison for the burglary and assault of a 71-year-old woman. <\/p>\n<p>Despite MFF\u2019s history of releasing repeat offenders, Harris encouraged her Twitter followers to donate to the nonprofit in June of 2020 with the intent of bailing out rioters, looters, and arsonists who were charged with vandalism and other crimes following the death of George Floyd. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><\/figure>\n<p>The tweet, which is still featured on the VP\u2019s Twitter feed, directs users to a <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.actblue.com\/donate\/kdh-social-minnesota-freedom-fund?refcode=tw200601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a> created by the Democrat fundraiser Act Blue. The page is emblazoned with a photo of Harris and the words \u201cKamala Harris For The People.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Harris\u2019s promotion, MFF raised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2020\/09\/03\/kamala-harris-tweeted-support-bail-fund-money-didnt-just-assist-protestors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$35 million in just a few weeks<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and co-producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
