This facet of his personality is part of what makes him so popular with Gen Z and younger fans. Based solely on who he\u2019s dated publicly, some fans believe the 28-year-old British-born singer is straight. But because his straightness is not certain, or rigid, Styles is cool enough to delight the younger crowd.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re at a point in society where identifying as \u201ccisgender\u201d is akin to being square. No one could accuse the \u201cWatermelon Sugar\u201d crooner of conformity, though. Styles is famous for churning out catchy songs that play in an endless loop on Pop 40 stations. He\u2019s also known for his eclectic fashion sense, which includes cross-dressing on the cover of major fashion magazines.<\/p>\n<p>Styles is currently dating actress Olivia Wilde, who is a woman. However, a new Rolling Stone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/harry-styles-harrys-house-dont-worry-darling-my-policeman-cover-1397290\/\">article<\/a> has everyone discussing his sexuality all over again. The article notes how critics have accused him of \u201cqueerbaiting\u201d over the years to appeal to that community and make more money by growing his gigantic fanbase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes people say, \u2018You\u2019ve only publicly been with women,\u2019 and I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve publicly been with anyone,\u201d Styles told the publication of his love life. \u201cIf someone takes a picture of you with someone, it doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re choosing to have a public relationship or something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s been coy about nailing down his feelings one way or the other for close to a decade now. Though his answers have varied, Styles has consistently avoided the question.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq-magazine.co.uk\/article\/one-direction-gq-covers-interview\">interview<\/a> with British GQ, the singer claimed he was \u201cpretty sure\u201d he didn\u2019t identify as bisexual. This wishy-washy, maybe-I-am-but-maybe-I\u2019m-not approach to defining his sexuality would become the norm for Styles as fans demanded to know what the pop star was doing in his bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>The interviewer asked Styles directly because of rumors about the nature of his relationship with friend Nick Grimshaw. The \u201cNight Changes\u201d singer confirmed he and Grimshaw were \u201cjust friends,\u201d which spurred the interviewer to ask,\u201cSo you\u2019re not bisexual?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Styles replied: \u201cBisexual? Me? I don\u2019t think so. I\u2019m pretty sure I\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a time in the not-so-distant past when identifying as LGBT would have been taboo for Hollywood stars. Now the pendulum has swung so far in the other direction that celebrities wear their queer status as a badge of honor to score points with progressive fans.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not to say that they\u2019re lying about their sexual orientation. But rather than keeping their sex lives private, famous folks are now publicizing their romantic pursuits, especially when they deviate from a heterosexual standard.<\/p>\n<p>Styles began his musical career as part of the boy band One Direction after an appearance on the reality competition show \u201cThe X Factor\u201d in 2010. One Direction became one of the most popular bands in the world, but it wasn\u2019t until Styles went solo that his fame really took off.<\/p>\n<p>During a 2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dSavUIRoIyI\">interview<\/a> alongside One Direction bandmate Liam Payne, Styles had a unique response to what he was looking for in a romantic partner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour favorite traits you look for in a girl?\u201d the interviewer asked.<\/p>\n<p>Payne answered first, jokingly saying: \u201cFemale. That\u2019s a good trait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Styles disagreed, saying that to him, finding a female love interest was \u201cnot that important.\u201d His top traits included a \u201cperson\u201d who is natural, has a sense of humor, and is nice.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the singer said he never thought it was important to label his sexuality. \u201cIt\u2019s weird for me \u2014 everyone should just be who they want to be,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/tvandshowbiz\/3560582\/harry-styles-new-album-therapy-flame-tess-ward-dan-wootton-exclusive\/\">Bizarre<\/a> during a discussion about Miley Cyrus announcing she was pansexual. \u201cIt\u2019s tough to justify somebody having to answer to someone else about stuff like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t feel like it\u2019s something I\u2019ve ever felt like I have to explain about myself,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Then in 2019, Styles addressed his propensity for wearing clothing typically associated with women, claiming the lines have gotten blurred between men and women. He thinks nothing of donning gowns and wearing nail polish and jewelry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany borders are falling \u2014 in fashion, but also in music, films, and art,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lofficielusa.com\/gucci-beauty\/harry-styles-fine-line-gucci-cover-story\">Styles told L\u2019Officiel Hommes<\/a> during an interview for a cover story. \u201cI don\u2019t think people are still looking for this gender differentiation. Even if the masculine and feminine exist, their limits are the subject of a game. We no longer need to be this or that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued, \u201cI think now, people are just trying to be good. In fashion and other fields, these parameters are no longer as strict as before, and it gives rise to great freedom. It\u2019s stimulating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s feminine and what\u2019s masculine, what men are wearing and what women are wearing \u2014 it\u2019s like there are no lines anymore,\u201d he stated again during another <a href=\"https:\/\/theface.com\/music\/harry-styles-feature-interview-music-stevie-nicks-elton-john-alessandro-michele-volume-4-issue-001\">interview<\/a> the same year.<\/p>\n<p>Styles had similar things to say about his sexuality during that conversation. \u200b\u201cI\u2019m not always super-outspoken.
